"The uniform thing ruined the movie for me. I couldnt get past that huge mistake. Dress uniforms cost a lot of money and officers pay for them themselves. NO WAY do you wear that underway unless you are having a burial at sea. In port for special occasions, maybe."
I dunno, I can't see Sean Connery doing a movie dressed like this:

NOBODY wears their dress uniform underway. Russian subs are filthy and they wear overalls.A Russian ballistic submarine commander seeking to defect and hand his boat over to the USA might. Dress uniform underway is unusual, but Clancy's novel reportedly was inspired by true events.

“The Navy looks for boring dead pan lifeless types with no personality to man their subs. Its a job qualification.”
Much like the late Bill Paxton’s acting style. God rest his soul.

Note the shoreline. He is not all that far from land. Also, how does that bastard keep his hair in place on open water? Apparently more oil than in the crankcase of my old truck?

For Anti Sub warfare, probably the P3 Orion. They still using P-3s in California? In Jacksonville, they've switched to 737s. (Of course, the P-8s did have problems with the Chinese electronics that they relied upon).

and back. If you are a Nork commander, you probably don't worry about getting the crew back. And if you are a Nork sailor, the only reason you'd want to go back would be to keep your family from getting tortured to death.

If their Whiskey is still operational, it has the range for a one way trip. The old Romeos might, as well.

I remember a few years back a missile was fired supposedly from an unknown sub from the California coast heading westward out to sea. At the time it was downplayed and multiple reasons were given for the huge contrail, but the message was clear, that missile could have been fired east from a sub off the California coast into various spots in the U.S. just as easily as aimed harmlessly west into the ocean. I am glad patrols are being done in hopes of deterring that eventuality, as Lard a$$ Kim Jong Un, or Crisco Kim, is unstable enough to try something like that.

Noticed both of his hands are grasping rails. He must not have very good sea legs.

A few years after that incident, the US military decided that announcing their sub launched ballistic missile tests off the west coast was the best play. Heck, feel like an idiot now after fighting the contrail bs story. No wonder the other side put up a good fight. But you cannot deny physics baby.
