Shoe chain Payless ShoeSource has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, becoming the latest retailer to succumb to increasing competition from online rivals like Amazon.

The Topeka, Kansas-based retailer said Tuesday that it will be immediately closing nearly 400 stores as part of the reorganization. It has over 4,400 stores in more than 30 countries and was founded in 1956. […]

Shoppers are increasingly shifting their buying online or going to discount stores like T.J. Maxx to grab deals on designer brands. That shift has hurt traditional retailers, even low-price outlets like Payless. …

Back in the mid nineteen-nineties Payless Shoes quit being (for all practical purposes) a family shoe store. My son and I wore wide shoes. There was little (often no) selection for us in the abbreviated shoe sections for men and boys after the change. We weren't going to drive around shopping at a different store for each family member.

Haven't even browsed a Payless but maybe once a year since then.

For my family, Payless closing isn't a small loss, it's no loss whatsoever.

Ebay has a great selection of new Frye boots and most are around $150.

We used to buy Payless because they shipped to APO addresses and at the time many online retailers didn’t. (2001 - 2008.) The kids shoes were decent, not great, but when they are younger you don’t need the shoes to last a year because they grow out of them in 4 months.

I got a pair if perfectly fitting Justin boots for Christmas, ordered online, wearing them literally every day since.

You must have some really smelly feet. I rotate my shoes every other day to let them dry out. Never wear the same pair two days in a row. Eccccchhhh. And you have to remove all of the dead skin a/k/a calluses on the soles of your feet. Takes years. Otherwise you are really asking for it.

I had a room mate in college who could clear the room when he took off his shoes. And I doubt it was the shoes. Years later I found out I snore. Everybody probably has something, but foot odor or rotting callouses? Nope. Just more luck I guess.

In a former life, I was very familiar with the company, been to their head quarters and main distribution warehouse.

If memory serves, there is a metal fabrication plant in their warehouse now.

I like Nocona, but tried some Justin and they are good too.
Then found out they are related somehow.

Nonsense. They stock various brands.

And while cheap, they have been good quality for my son. The last time I used WalMart, the soles peeled off in a month.

For kids who can’t use them very long, it is a good value.

Thanks! I’ll check that out. I don’t LET myself go to eBay often - too much temptation! :)

Could have returned it. Really the important part is the manufacturer not the distributor. Amazon sells almost everything, which means some of their manufacturers stink, and some don’t. If you get something from a bad manufacturer return it, and avoid that manufacturer. We get cloths from Amazon a lot, we just make sure we know the manufacturer and they can be trusted.

“Could have returned it.”

I know-—I just couldn’t be bothered.

I have done TONS of shopping on Amazon and know how the system works but my clothing purchase didn’t turn out well. Glad you have had better luck.

Don’t know if you do designer stuff but there’s a site that does guaranteed authentic I buy from. Just bought a pair of slightly used Chanel sunglasses off there the other day.
Lollipuff.com
I like my expensive stuff but don’t want to pay for it. Lol

I just added a bright red pair of Crocs for gardening, too. $24!

My two best ‘finds’ at Thrift Shops have been a pair of designer sunglasses with case - 99-cents. Looked them up on line: $99.00!

A new black leather purse - paid $5.74. Looked it up on line, $101.00 retail at Macy’s.

I love being a Bottom Feeder. ;)

Yeah I don’t do thrift stores. Can’t stand the smell. Luckily I can afford not to shop at them. When I was a kid everything we owned came from thrift stores.
My taste runs rather high so I just find the best discounts I can on stuff. My sunglasses all would run $350 up retail. I also have a Chanel, a Gucci, and a Louis Vuitton handbag. Can’t find those for $100 at Macy’s. Lol. I did however buy them at discounted prices. I never pay full price for anything.
I used to buy designer accessories and resale them on eBay. How I got into the high end items. For years I took all my profits and rolled them into items for myself.
