The Topeka, Kansas-based retailer said Tuesday that it will be immediately closing nearly 400 stores as part of the reorganization. It has over 4,400 stores in more than 30 countries and was founded in 1956. […]

Shoppers are increasingly shifting their buying online or going to discount stores like T.J. Maxx to grab deals on designer brands. That shift has hurt traditional retailers, even low-price outlets like Payless. …

I buy almost everything at amazon except shoes and clothes.

Don’t trust the fit.

I guess many people do.

It’s been very tough on sole proprietors.

Payless will now have to toe the line, which is hard considering their CEO is a real heel.

I’m tough to fit for shoes and clothes as well. Shoes mostly. I buy the same size and types of pants and slacks off Amazon no problems.

They have an internet presence. I have a good friend who’s pretty high up in their management. They have a lot of debt from the acquisition about five years ago, and retail is just not doing well. He thought that the uncertainty of the election contributed to the difficulties (no, he was not blaming Trump).

Oh crud.

Everything I touch turns to $!#@$.

Finally settled on using PayLess nearby for our son’s ever-changing dress and boots, after years of using Wally/Target. Those shoes suddenly became cruddy and unreliable, so was happy to find a pop-in place no more expensive than Target.

Seems every time I find something, it goes belly up!

The New America:

Blame the closure on politics and president. Cry out about everything changing.

The Old America:

Buy the stock at a low price, setup your own shop and sell it for a more reasonable price that still covers your expense, transportation and marketing.

I’ll be waiting at the door on closing day. You bet.

I bought a loose,sweater like top through Amazon-—not expensive.

When I received it I took one look and tossed it in the trash-—tags and all.

A neighbor asked why I didn’t donate it to Goodwill———I told her even a beggar wouldn’t have worn it.

That was it for Amazon and clothing.

I would never buy shoes without a try-on.
I’ve seen Viet and Chinese made shoes vary by one and a half men’s sizes.

I would be terrified to buy shoes on-line.

I got a pair if perfectly fitting Justin boots for Christmas, ordered online, wearing them literally every day since. Know your size, check comments for how they fit others, and stick with a quality brand. Of course I’ll be the first to admit luck had something to do with it.

I have bought from Payless a few times through the years. Their quality is really bad. CHEAP shoes at cheap prices.

Secondly, if anyone is looking for an AWESOME place to buy shoes on-line, use Zappos.com

Simply amazing selection, name brands, tons of sizes and if you don’t like the shoes, you can send them back FOR FREE.

It’s an awesome business platform. I’ve found none better.

I miss my Frye boots like nothing else I’ve ever missed in my life - including Ex-husbands, LOL!

30 years later, they’re $300 a pop and I can’t justify the cost. :(

Ive bought a lot of shoes.....and handbags from zappos. Super easy returns. They send a return label with the product.
They also have an outlet. 6pm. I just bought a $250 pair of UGGs for I think $90.

“The Topeka, Kansas-based retailer...” Yeah, right. There is a town in China with 70K making shoes for Payless. The town has its own school, hospital and fire department. No, people are not allowed to leave the town. And they make about $2 a day. Thus, as a person can see, the shoes at Payless are cheap and low quality. Very sad. I asked the son of the man who runs the town in China about paying the workers $3 a day. He said, that would cause us to lose business.

Payless going out of business? They lasted longer than expected.
