March 28 recognizes a food holiday known as National Black Forest Cake Day. Black Forest cake is the English name for the German dessert Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte, meaning Black Forest cherry torte.
Most often, the Black Forest cake is made of several layers of chocolate cake with whipped cream and cherries between each layer. The cake is then decorated with whipped cream, maraschino cherries and chocolate shavings. In some traditional recipes, sour cherries are used between the layers and a Kirschwasser (a clear liquor distilled from tart cherries) is added to the cake. In the United States, alcohol is usually not used. However, in Germany, the liqueur is a mandatory ingredient. Otherwise, the cake can not legally be sold under the Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte name.
The cake is named after the specialty liquor (Schwarzwalder Kirschwasser) of the region of the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) mountain range in southwestern Germany.

Where can we get the Freebies?
Yum. I use to buy one for Christmas / New Year’s every year. Haven’t had one in a couple of year. :)
I made a home-made chocolate cake today, but it’s not black forest: Mine is a “black-magic” chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream frosting. Both cake and frosting are made with dark cocoa and espresso, so the cake and frosting both are almost black. Sooooooooo rich and fattening!
Wow! Cue Homer Simpson drool photo!
Both cakes sound delicious.
A favorite from childhood was always the deep dark, moist, rich chocolate cake and a lemon whipped frosting, shaved dark chocolate on top. No calories in that! :-\
BLACK FOREST CAKE is found many times as being a Groom’s Cake here in the south Whatever it might be called - a spoon and large piece, please.
Black Forest Cake is racist. Why is there no “white” forest cake?
The best I’ve ever had was served up in a pub in Dublin, Ireland. Black Forest Gateau. Very rich dark chocolate, excellent. Beautifully done, too.
Eh, no thanks. Tried those chocolate tubes filled with kirsch, and didn't care for them.
(I did buy a bottle of cherry brandy to add a 1/2 teaspoon to cheese fondue as a paean to the dish.)
There was a German bakery in Yorkville that made sinfully delicious Black Forest cakes. Wonder if they are stll in business.
That reminds me, I need to make another cake. I ran out last week.
