Actually, none of the modern guys can hold a candle to the old Black Snake Handlers. We used to sneak in the back of the tent, smile at the sweet old sweaty fat Black lady in the white dress and she would give a glass of lemonade and seat near the front.
If you didn’t have a date, it was not football season or there was some sucky picture at the movie house, The Snake Handlers and the Rollers and Key Shakers were the best act in town.
The only problem was, we always had to have a designated “Savee”, sort of like the designated driver. If you were the last one there, your were the “savee,” and you had to go up even further, because no one got to go home till at least one poor heathen White boy got “saved.”
The show got even better when our buddy Sid Leventhal was “it.”
