What is Pinterest good for? (I haven't figured it out.)

I'm relatively new to "social networks" in the truest sense of the word. My sister raves about Pinterest, and tried to get me interested, but I'm not seeing any usefulness in it. What is it, what does it do, how does it advance my place in the universe, and who cares? It looks like a bunch of pictures to me. Pretty shallow.

I'm thinking it might be useful for widening exposure to some items I'm selling on Etsy, but don't know. Anyone with hands-on knowledge?

Here is a funny review/explanation I found on Gizmodo.com:

https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2012/02/pinterest-yes-another-social-network-is-it-useful/

On paper, you would peruse Pinterest to find something fun to make for dinner, or sassy new earrings to craft by hand. Or maybe inspiration for redoing your basement.

In practice, it serves as the equivalent of going through a catalogue and circling all the shit you want but can't have. The beautiful face you wish was yours, the dress you wish you could fit into, the motorcycle you wish you could afford, the quiche you wish you had the patience and ability to make. The resounding spirit of Pinterest is I love this!, rather than I'll do this! It's aspirational. It's full of dreams. It's entirely materialistic — the offal of cyber shopping spree fantasies, too decadent or distant to ever actually possess. Like raisins in the sun, the multitude of pinboards just accumulate beautiful details that don't coalesce into much of anything.

Is this accurate?

My wife and daughters love it. They’ve gotten lots of ideas from it.

I don’t go on Pinterest a lot, but it was a godsend when I planned my 5-year-old daughter’s birthday party. We had a really nice DIY party that was fun, creative, and cheap!!

Wedding planning. That seems to be a popular use. I don’t use it, just going by what I’m told.

Hillary planned Chelsea’s wedding without it, though. Did it all via email. Those wedding emails will be turning up any day now.

I disagree that it is only for chicks. I have found plenty of idea related to my workshop, cedar projects, garden, tips and tricks.

The purpose is to go public, get a bunch of stupid Millennials to pay obscene prices for the stock, sell your interest in the company, use part of the proceeds to donate to Hillary's next campaign, then visit Obama in Tahiti this month. Other than that, it's a total waste of time.

That’s the reason I like it. You get a lot of ideas from it, for crafts, decor, color and design, etc. I think of it as ‘inspirational’ not ‘aspirational’.

It's good for inspiring creative ideas about what to do with everyday stuff.

For instance, here's what I made from a bunch of old pallets.

It is very useful to graphic designers to build mood boards. You can find and store all kinds of images, colors, etc. on a particular Pinterest board. You can find great recipes on Pinterest. You can find all kinds of esoterical collections of things-—how to display houseplants indoors, cool mid-century furniture, DIY projects with PVC pipe, etc. It’s a super resource, NOT “just for chicks”.

It’s pictures of how to do crafts, foods, parties, tasks. It’s a horrible rabbit hole. If I need to get ideas on how to organize something or make a costume, I try to go in fast and get out fast. I hate the place. I hate how it works.

If you’re a visual person, Pinterest can be very interesting and exciting.

Yeah but it took 31,000 emails. Pinterest would ahve been easier.

What would you have done without Pinterest?

My follow-up question is does it allow posting of words as well as pictures? Ideas?

That's why I characterized it as shallow. If it only appeals to people seeking bright, shiny objects, and not ideas, I'll just drop the subject.

There is great political stuff on it. There is humor. There are some great gardening tips. Recipes for whatever you are interested. Educational tips and explanations. There is a lot to lighten the load in these stressful times. Let’s say you love dogs. Or you appreciate America or heroism. You can type in in the terms, and there is a lot to appreciate.
