FULL TITLE: 'Many people were saying, "It can't happen here." Now, not so much': The Handmaid's Tale author Margaret Atwood warns the US is growing more and more like her dystopian society
Margaret Atwood, who authored the award-winning novel The Handmaid's Tale in 1985, has spoken out to say that the US is growing ever closer to the once-unimaginable dystopian society portrayed in her book.
The 77-year-old Canadian author is gearing up for the debut of a new on-screen adaption of her novel, which is set to air on Hulu next month and stars Mad Men's Elizabeth Moss.
In anticipation of the mini-series, Atwood who has won the Booker Prize, a Los Angeles Times Fiction Award, and Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal participated in a new Q&A on Reddit, in which she discussed the renewed relevancy of her most famous work of fiction.

Hyper feminist and most over rated Canadian writer. For some reason she is the one promoted towards us Canadians, likely because of her liberal viewpoints. The good Canadian writers, just happen to be great writers, that so happen to be Canadian, if you get my drift. They don’t need special promotion from the liberal establishment to get an audience.
I really don’t know and in fact rather not know his politics, but Gordon R Dickson happens to be a good Canadian writer, with his interesting novel Wolf and Iron. Just as one example.
If we get to a dystopian society, there’s gonna be seriously cool hairstyles and tattoos, and I’m gonna be on the streets with Ice T gettin’ back at Tha Man. In a trenchcoat.
The Handmaid’s Tale was a seriously confusing book to me. I kept wondering whom this allegory was supposed to portray. Halfway through I was not seeing any point or coherence to the meandering story.
When it finally became evident she was trashing Christianity, I hurled the book at the wall.
She wrote another novel I did enjoy: The Blind Assassin, though I can’t remember what it was *about.* Since I liked that one, I went and read the more famous Handmaid’s Tale, and hated the story. Didn’t think it was as well written, either.
She does often turn a good phrase; her vocabulary, prose that veers poetic, and use of irony are all good meat for chewing.
I adored Wolf and Iron. Dickson in general is one of my favorites; great adventure with some thought behind it.
Never tried it so I take your word on that. 8>)
You’ll save 11 bucks a month!!
I tested it for you :)
Only if it replaces something I already have. What would it replace that I have? 8>)
IT’S A THEORETICAL SAVINGS!!!
I had my cat write out the equation :)
