For Daniel Barbarisi, fantasy is reality.
In December 2015, he quit his job as the Yankees beat reporter for the Wall Street Journal to play fantasy sports, embed himself in that world and tell its story. In the process, during 2016, he earned $100,000 $30,000 more than he made at his writing job.
People now think my decision to do it is the greatest thing ever, said the 37-year-old, who lives in Boston. At the beginning, though? They thought I was insane.

I quit my job and joined Free Republic. Moms basement isn’t that bad.
I don’t know if it is an urban legend but I have heard about Vietnamese or Chinese people who are paid a few bucks an hour to just play video games to increase people’s virtual loot and what have you that the employers turn around and sell in RL.
But *shrug* who knows?
Insane folks do not understand that they are insane.’
For every winner you need 100 suckers to support him.Once people figure that out the jig is up
I bought a lottery ticket this year and won 100k, so next year I’m buying lottery tickets too. Easy street!
He got 70k from wsj to write about sports?
“Once people figure that out the jig is up”
Been to Vegas lately? I think he’s safe from the masses wising up.
I just wish someone could sell me a book about the “One Great Secrets” of this fast money making trick, or a few others. I’d bet my “jaw would drop” if I only knew the “plain simple truth” about this “obama program” that would forgive my debts and make my hair grow back!

In Vegas you play the house, fantasy sports is a pyramid scheme
It’s super-easy to make $100k playing fantasy sports, if you start with $300k.
It’s common for very popular fantasy games to be mined for really good equipment and then that equipment is sold to people wanting that equipment without doing all the work to get it.
That person buying it might only pay $3 for the best sword, but 50,000 people might be buying that same sword. It’s a good enterprise for those who can do that.
People not addicted to gambling who can view your actions logically look at you as being lucky this year........
At the beginning, though? They thought I was insane.
Talk to us for the next 3 years and tell us how lucky you have been............but don't expect me to fund your losing addiction by buying your book or CD......
Wanna bet that this a hole is collecting unemployment while he’s at it? THis is how these slime balls work.
And once he starts losing, good luck explaining that gap in your resume.

Isn’t fantasy sports just a different type of gambling??
So he made money playing fantasy sports. How much was just luck?
We had a friend of the family who used to go to Vegas a number of times a year. He always said he was “making expenses”. They had a nice house, nice cars. I think he was a blue collar worker of some kind working as a county maintenance worker.
Point is, it looks like he did make some money gambling, as his house and cars seemed nicer than he could afford from his pay from work. However he never got rich enough to quit the job.
For 10 bucks I will tell people who is going to win the race in Vegas this weekend.
