Party Of Science: Democrat Congressional Candidate Brianna Wu Doesn’t Know How Gravity Works

February 28, 2017 By

U.S. House candidate Brianna Wu, a Massachusetts Democrat, is worried that people will drop rocks from the moon that will hit the earth and kill people.

Wu, who gained notoriety after getting involved in the GamerGate controversy of 2014 and is now challenging sitting Rep. Stephen Lynch, tweeted that she isn’t happy about SpaceX’s plan to ferry private citizens to the moon by 2018, for reasons that will make your head explode.

it's almost like someone deleted the second tweet as it was incredibly stupid pic.twitter.com/CvhUOhCJ4c

She also made it abundantly clear that she has no idea how gravity works.

Wu has since doubled down on her earlier assertions that the moon is dangerous because you can fire a large rock from it and hit the earth.

2/ Like, you all can make fun of that statement, but it will still be true. This is why the militarization of space is so dangerous.

— Brianna Wu (@Spacekatgal) February 28, 2017

For the sake of fairness, let’s play along with Wu’s theory for a hot second. Let’s say that the moon, which is an estimated 238,900 miles away from earth, could potentially become a tactical base from which asteroids or missiles could be launched towards our planet.

Oooh, scary.

But if someone did intend to destroy our home planet from space, they wouldn’t need to send people to the moon to mine large rocks and build a really big slingshot aimed towards earth. It would be significantly cheaper and easier for someone to launch an orbital weapon into space that could rain missiles down on our planet at a closer range. Lucky for us earthlings, this kind of space weaponry has been banned for decades, thanks to a series of treaties dating back to the Cold War. Long story short, Wu’s concerns are very far-fetched and practically improbable, if not entirely impossible.

Wu isn’t the only Democrat who’s made an eyebrow-raising statement about physical reality. Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) once said he was afraid the island of Guam would tip over and fall into the ocean if too many people were on it at once.

“My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize,” Johnson said.

That clip will never get old.

Hey Democrats, ya’ll should probably rethink the whole “we love science more than you” schtick until you can figure out what gravity is and how islands are formed.

A brain is not a Constitutional requirement for Congress members. Strictly optional, often an obstacle to getting elected.

Meh. It’s easier to just do that from earth. Hence the existence of the big guns on battleships.

Maybe she can move to Guam and balance the island so it doesn’t tip over when those moon rocks hit it. /s

The escape velocity of the moon is actually far more than you could hit a golf ball. It’s far more than you could fire a bullet. Everything with mass has gravity, including the moon. We know that because of all the manhole covers that get stuck to Rosie O’Donnell when she goes out.

"Wu has since doubled down on her earlier assertions that the moon is dangerous because you can fire a large rock from it and hit the earth."

I rise to join my colleague and declare that her theory has merit. Remember what happened to Buenos Aires when the Arachnid sent an asteroid from the Klendathu system.

It is getting quite challenging to decide which Dem has the least intelligence: This idiot, who thinks that you “drop” things from the Moon on to the Earth, Johnson with his Guam tipping over comments, or the dumbass harpy who rattled on about our manned landing on Mars.

Yeah, they’re the party of science...as in, “Science Fiction & Fantasy.”

And per Demonrats, Guam will tip over if too many Marines are stationed there.

It’s far more than you could fire a bullet.

It is 7,800 fps.

Some specialized cannon (Gerald Bull’s super gun designs, and some gas guns) have already exceeded that number.

Rail guns do so regularily.

Firing projectiles form the moon to cause nuclear level impacts on the earth is completely doable.

It requires a significant technological presence on the moon.

Could an asteroid belt based system do it easier? Maybe.

Firing a rock from the moon? I’m trying to wrap my head around this one.

She knows what she is talking about because she herself was likely struck with a rock from the moon.

Why do I say that? Because she appears to be a lunatic.

“lunatic” from Lunaticus (late Latin), literally “moon-struck.”

You should understand what your talking about before going public. I’m referring to you Heartlander, not Wu.

The gravity well between the Moon and Earth makes it completely possible to fling rocks from the moon as high speed kinetic weapons containing the destructive energy of nuclear weapons. If you want an education on the method, read Robert Heinlien’s “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress”. It contains a detailed tutorial on the technique. As for the question of why from the Moon and not from orbit. The moon is a ready source of raw material and not easily countered from Earth. Anything in orbit must first be lifted there and is always a ready target for Earth based defenses.

Congressman Wu may be an idiot, but Heartlander is a dangerous idiot for proclaiming someone stupid by loudly shouting something more stupid.

From the Wikipedia article on Kinetic Bombardment:

In the mid-1960s, popular science interest in orbital mechanics led to a number of science fiction stories which explored their implications. Among these was The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress by Robert A. Heinlein in which the citizens of the Moon bombard the Earth with rocks wrapped in iron containers which are in turn fired from an electromagnetic launch system at Earth-based targets.

And even if you could fire a rock with enough force to escape the moon’s gravity, the precision needed to hit the Earth would be, well, astronomical.

Any rock that did manage to hit the Earth would burn up in the atmosphere unless it the size of a house. Then gravity really becomes a problem as well as what size would the gun have to be to launch such a massive object into space.

And why would anyone want to hit the Earth anyway? Wouldn’t you hurt yourself if the rock was massive enough? It would take incredible precision to hit a particular country.
