What a stupid essay.

Many (perceived) great public people of various talents in history have been described as ‘jerks’ and ‘offensive personalities’ in private................

I agree, yet I read the whole thing.

The Gulag Archipelago was very tedious and bot the ‘inspired’ work everyone proclaimed it to be.

Entertaining depiction of one of Nabokov's lectures at Cornell back in the 1950s, with Nabokov portrayed by Christopher Plummer (in 1989, long after his famous portrayal of Captain Georg von Trapp):
The Metamorphosis.

Nabakov may have been a world-class jerk (and that seems accurate), but anyone who says that Lolita was "a gruesome celebration of pedophile rape" has the reading comprehension skills of a dull third-grader.

There are plays by Aristophanes I haven’t read yet. Nabakov is pretty far down on the list.

Nothing he wrote was great art.
But people with letters behind their name who want to show how enlightened they are like to force young people to read filth.

Speak, Memory is the best autobiographical account I have ever read. Ironically, if it weren't for his mediocre works, it would never have been published.

Sure, Nabokov was a jerk.
Edmund Wilson was a jerk.
Alex Beam is a massive jerk.
Truly a horrible person.
Mortimer Adler was kind of a jerk, too, but the way Beam ridiculed him was unforgivable.
