An Italian man allegedly shot dead the driver who killed his wife after changing his cover picture to Russell Crowe in Gladiator.

Fabio Di Lello is accused of killing Italo D’Elisa, weeks before the 22-year-old was due to appear in court charged with the manslaughter of his wife.

Roberta Smargiassi, 33, had been riding a moped last summer when the dead driver ploughed into her after allegedly jumping a red light.

Di Lello had posted a picture of Russel Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius as his cover photo on Facebook in months before the shooting.

In the film, the character seeks vengeance after his family are murdered famously describing himself as ‘husband to a murdered wife’.

Di Lello is alleged to have shot the driver outside a cafe in Vasto, central Italy, before the 34-year-old is alleged to have place the pistol on his wife’s grave, reports the Telegraph.

The semi-professional football player was arrested on Wednesday and has been remanded in custody, while a post-mortem is carried out.

Di Lello’s wife, Roberta, was driving a moped last summer when she was hit by a Fiat Punto driven by D’Elisa.

He had been due to appear in court on manslaughter charges later this month.

Poorly written about a horrible story. If someone killed my woman like that, I hate to think of what I'd do.

His heart was broken. Was the driver drunk?

I would’ve shot him too.

Crime would go way down is we saw more of it. Advocating? You just can’t count on the legal system here.

The use of an adjective of result in the headline is somewhat distracting - it shouldn’t be placed next to the noun.

Not to mention “riding a moped last summer when the dead driver ploughed into her.”

The Driving Dead.

I have zero faith nor trust in the legal system. Every time I’ve come in contact with the legal system I’ve found corruption and stupidity. Something like that happened to me, I’d handle justice myself.

Poorly written. Yes. First the guy shoots a dead driver and then a dead driver ploughs into a Moped. It was an arresting headline.

My first thought: The guy was already dead. Why shoot him?

Do you mean the placement of the word ‘dead’?
It does tend to clutter the headline. That’s a lot of info to absorb in one glance, and the word wasn’t really needed there.

I was thinking the same thing. It’s a tragic story and I have a feeling the author of this piece speaks another language; probably Italian and used some kind of translator to change it into English.

It reads like the driver was dead and then the husband found and shot him.

It’s a good thing the husband employed a head shot against the dead driver that killed the wife. Thanks for the picture of the perp — it clarified things.

I think that's what they meant to write - unless it was the driver who changed his cover picture.

Someone is in need of a good copy-editor.
