I came across a reference to the guy that was first to explore the Grand Canyon, and on the way out, his party ran across a trapper that said he planted some crops on an island in the Platte River, and to help themselves.

The untended crops weren't all that great, but they took some potato tops in the early/mid Summer, and they all got sick from them.

I am having a hard time connecting the Platte River with the Grand Canyon. Have ridden horseback along the Platte. Seemed a long way from the Grand Canyon. I thought the Grand Canyon had the Colorado River going thru it.
