A neighborhood crime awareness and fundraising benefit starts at 10 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 28) for Michael County, a Domino's worker killed Monday (Jan.23) while making a pizza delivery in Algiers.

The "Take Back Algiers" event, sponsored by the Algiers Neighborhood President Council, is in the parking lot of the Harry's Ace hardware store, 4855 General Meyer Ave. which is next door to the store County had worked for five years.

The event is expected to last until 6 p.m.

Domino's in Algiers will donate 50 percent of all orders placed from Jan. 23 - 29 to County's family, according to a news release.

Domino's is a stand up company. Over the past few years we have had a few Domino's delivery guys slain in robberies and Domino's always steps up to raise money for the families and the company always adds money to the crime stoppers fund to find the perpetrators and so far the success rate has been 100%.

The crime stoppers fund is currently at 25,000 dollars so I am sure that the murdering crook will be caught.

How sad. Algiers is a beautiful place. I’ve walked around it to admire its quaint architectural beauty many times.

Ever notice the old courthouse that faces the river? When I was a child, we had an oil painting that my grandfather had done from memory of the New Orleans riverfront. Sternwheeler steamboats nosed-in to the near bank, being loaded with goods to go upriver. It looked like a scene from "Showboat". On the far side of the river, granddad had included a building with two squared-off towers.

One day I had occasion to go to that courthouse and walked out on a river-facing upstairs balcony - and realized that I was seeing a reverse image of that old painting. I was standing in that odd, distant building.

IIRC, part of the building used to be a jail, as well. Iron barred windows set high up in the walls of what are now the restrooms.

Domino’s ISN’T a stand up company. They have a history of firing drivers who arm themselves for self protection. They’d rather throw a few dollars at the survivors than to help their drivers stay alive.

And they won’t red-line dangerous neighborhoods to protect their drivers.

I’ll consider Domino’s a stand up company when they subsidize guns for their drivers, and block deliveries to known trouble areas.

It’s been awhile since I’ve been to Algiers so I don’t remember the courthouse. But as a fan of the novel and movie Show Boat, I’ve often daydreamed about that era when visiting NOLA. The tourist-y “steamboat” that plies that water is quite pretty and atmospheric. So sad what’s happened to that wonderful town.

The part about Domino’s firing drivers who arm themselves is correct. The part about Domino’s not “red-lining” dangerous neighborhoods is not. Just ask Al or Jessie.

You’ve probably walked around Algiers Point, near the ferry and Blaine Kern’s Mardi Gras float factory. I know some people down there who share their Victorian mansion with a charming lady ghost. The larger Algiers area is a mix of blah suburbs and slums.
