British firm unveils research which shows that the atmosphere could be used to spy on ordinary citizens in unprecedented detail. BAE Systems are designing a directed energy laser system that could allow military commanders to spy on enemy activities from space.
BAE believe that within 50 years, one of their aircraft could use an “atmospheric lens” to observe people from very long distances using the Earth’s atmosphere as a tool.
The lasers temporarily change the Earth’s atmosphere into magnifying glass structures which can alter light and radio signals......
A high pulsed power laser system will temporarily heat a small region of atmosphere so it will mimic the ionosphere – which bounces radio signals

Increasing military surveillance by means like this is fine but becomes less helpful for nuclear and other sensitive military technology buried deep underground. We will need other means for that.

Seems hard to defend against, especially if you’re using it mainly to take a quick picture of an area.
Looking more and more like preppers need to stock up on mega tin foil. If you are building a new house, better look into various and sundry ways to put shields on the roof. LOL

I remember flying mid pacific around sunset and sunrise before GPS with the old shut down Omega long distance RF NAV system. Propagation at sunset would cause drop lock sometimes. Generally we could find the boat ok, never got too lost I guess.
