Dean Spanos On His 'Difficult' Decision to Move Chargers Back To LA

The Rams returned to L.A. last year, and the Chargers CEO Dean Spanos confirmed last Thursday that his team is also moving back. Spanos' decision comes after years of haggling with the city of San Diego to secure tax money to build a new stadium, but the request did not receive public support. In November, voters went to the poll and rejected the measure asking for $1.15 billion in taxpayer funding for a new stadium and convention center annex in San Diego, 57 percent to 43 percent.

Baby Bro lives in SD - his take: “If you want a billion dollars more of my tax money you don’t get to charge me a hundred bucks a ticket too.”

Spanos couldn’t build his own stadium?

I wonder where the Chargers will go after the NFL fails (again) of having two teams in L.A.?

The Raiders won the Superbowl in L.A. and their attendance was still mild at best.

The NFL has it in their head that since New York can support two teams so can L.A.

The Problem is that their is too much to do in Los Angeles. Even in winter time.

Having Two Teams in L.A. hasn't worked in the past Spanos and it won't work this time.

How does Oklahoma City Chargers Sound? Salt Lake City Chargers?

OKC would be a great city for a franchise.

I disagree about OKC - they already have a solid football team just to the south in Norman, and another one to the north in Stillwater.

St Louis?

YES! That is Perfect Sybeck.

St. Louis Chargers.

Then after 20 years they can move back to San Diego because of "Stadium Issues"

Love it.

I was pleasantly surprise the voters turn him down. Haven’t liked Spanos for years. Used to live in Scal. Many years ago papa Spanos got caught on open mike saying how taxpayers should pay for new stadium.

He had enough money to do so. Notice they move to a privately funded one in LA? IMO Spanos has wanted out of SD for years.

Plus as a fan had to live thru the nightmare that was Ryan Leaf. Another poor decision by them. Last week they showed the new logo at the Staples Center. Everyone booed.

If spanos thinks he is going to get rabid Raiders fans to like the chargers he is insane. Yes I know Raiders moving to Vegas.

The logic that if the city builds the stadium they can get payment back by renting it out for other uses.

Then why didn’t Spanos build it and rent it out, if it’s such a great investment?

The Chargers are my team, but they need a new owner, an experienced coach and another good draft. Don’t have a whole lot of faith that his sons will be any better at it than he was.

it would be fitting if all the NFL teams became nomads, failing to find even one city willing to screw its citizens into paying for a billionaire’s golden goose, with nothing in return but exorbitant prices for tickets, parking and food, in order to pay the prima donnas who play, and demonstrate zero loyalty to a location other than that housing their bank accounts.

{taking a breath)

Wasn’t Ike or JFK still in the White House the last time that that franchise was based in Los Angeles?

When the San Francisco Giants threatened to move in the 1980s, MLB stepped in to find a buyer to keep them in San Francisco.

Apparently, the NFL doesn’t work that way.

Joe Robbie did it.
Then when he died the gub mint taxed his heirs to where they had to sell the stadium and Miami Dolphins to pay inheritance taxes.

Chargers intent to play two seasons in a 30,000 seat stadium I be Spanos will come to regret his decision to move when he looks out and sees 20,000 empty seats on game day.

Strange these guys have forgotten why the Rams and Raiders left LA the first time.

The NFL has it in their head that since New York can support two teams so can L.A.

So do Anglenos, at least some of them. they think that because New York has two teams, tehy're ENTITLED toptwo. Never mind that they can't actually be bothered to go to the games, watch them on TV, or buy the merchandise. They're LA. They're entitled.

Besides, it works in baseball, right? If there are two baseball teams making money, then the NFL thinks there MUST be two football teams. They think this will help cement their status as the premier sport in a time of declining TV ratings.

I think it may just do the opposite.
