Replacing Kalashnikov Rifles Hits a Snag in Ukraine
Newsweak ^ | January 15, 2017 | Nolan Peterson

Kalashnikov assault rifles are among the most iconic symbols of the Soviet military.

Weapons such as the AK-47, the AKM, the AK-74 and the AK-103 are ubiquitous reminders of the Red Army’s legacy among the modern militaries of former Warsaw Pact countries and Soviet client states.

Also, the contemporary use of Kalashnikovs by worldwide terrorists and insurgent groups offers grim evidence of the widespread proliferation of Soviet weapons during and after the Cold War.

On January 3, as part of a long-term plan to adopt NATO military standards, Ukraine took a step toward ditching this Soviet military carryover.

What’s the point if they’re not going to use 5.56x45 ammo?

I used to have an AK chambered in 5.56. (Before the tragic boating accident on the Ohio during flood stage.)

“There’s money to be made at NATO.”

This will not go well. The 7.62x39mm is notoriously fickle in the AR-15/M-16 due to the bullet shape, the same issues that 5.56mm have in AKs. The Israelis worked most of it out with the Galil but that’s an AK-style.

The whole purpose of the M-16 project was to develop a lighter rifle than the M-14. The 7.62x39mm ammo is already heavier than 5.56mm. They can make the rifle lighter but that would require materials not suited for cold (aka plastic) being used by soldiers that are used to much sturdier rifles (Mosin, AK).

Poland doesn’t seem to have had problems with the WZ-96 Beryl - an AK platform in 5.56x45 NATO. I suspect there is more to the story.

Yes, that's why I think it's about money rather than reliability and interchangeability.

Ukraine does not need to worry about what configuration of Kalashnikov they use. They need ATGMs. Desperately.....As demonstrated during Slavyansk, Debaltseve, etc. etc.

I replaced the upper wood forestock on my AK 47 slide fire with the metal heat shields from my stock AR 15 M4orgery grips.
A little trimming and they fit perfectly.
Now I don’t worry about it catching fire.

Unless I completely failed at reading the article. They are adopting an AR platform chambered for 7.62x39mm

Been there, done that. Not exactly a problem. They could just go to POF and get some.
