I think Rudy Giuliani is involved with that 90 day report.

Sure!

Start by turning off Cortana. This turns off your hot mic for Cortana's keyword listening.

Next, turn off the MS Consumer Experience. This is a substantial data miner.

Then, turn off telemetry. This is anonymous usage data. There are also ways to disable outbound data distribution from these services using a firewall, if you're tech savvy.

Finally, if you want a definitive privacy guide, just following guides like this. They give you plenty of additional settings to configure if you're uber paranoid.

As with all things, YMMV.

YMMV....depending on the length of the antenna and the shielding on the cable, right?

I’ll take “it shouldn’t be collecting data to begin with” for $500 Alex.
And Microsoft themselves admitted it collects data.
From what programs you use, to how often.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2971725/windows/how-to-reclaim-your-privacy-in-windows-10-piece-by-piece.html

Sorry, an OS should just do what it is supposed to do, not collect the data.

I prefer Windows 7, it doesn’t look like the butthurt screen from Idiocracy.

A phone security company got hacked and this proves Tim Cook right?

Sorry, I don’t follow.

A phone security company got hacked and this proves Tim Cook right?

Sorry, I don’t follow.

Cellebrite's is not a "phone security company" that got hacked, it's a company that breaks the security of computer operating systems, encryptions, etc, i.e. it's a high-end HACKING company that got hacked. Tim Cook had warned that if a hack were available it would NOT remain secret and would spread into the wild. He said that if Apple made such a buck door for the FBI, no matter how much the FBI promised to keep it secret, it would be allowed escape into the wild either due to hacking, bribery, or other means. Cellebrite assured assured the world their techniques were securely locked down in their vaults and they were offering to unlock iPhone 5's on a one off basis, now that they had developed the technique for $15,000, or a law enforcement agency could buy a package of six unlocking for $60,000. They were certain THEY could't be hacked and their technology was secure. They were wrong.

Tim Cook was right. Once someone knows it's out there, it will be in the wild within months.

Can’t sleep? How is your wife doing?

My girlfriend is fine. It was me that had the heart attack last Friday. I slept a lot during the day. My diurnal pattern has been thrown off. Hospitals are the only place where they wake you up every fifty minutes to ask if your sleeping well. . . I had to come home to get some sleep. LOL!

Yeah, sure he was right.

How much more "right" can you get than making a specific prediction that any such ability to break into the iPhone WOULD be released into the wild regardless of how much security was placed around it, and how many guarantees that it wouldn't? He said it would be allowed to get out and it has been.

That is pretty damn right, China.

I was making the same argument and gave numerous examples of how it happens. . . often at the hands of the police, courts, or news media. . . sometimes done with the best of intentions, which of course pave to road to Hell.

Before you eat that headshake, do your research. Microsoft spends more money and has more security resources than Symantec, mcAfee, Crowdstrike, etc. they are the largest security provider in the world, bar none.

And in case you think I’m all bluster:
https://www.gartner.com/doc/1405123/microsoft-security-capabilities-portfolio

Read at your leisure.

Microsoft is consistently ranked in Gartners magic quadrant which represents the best of the best. Any IT security department worth their salt shops magic quadrant companies. They represent the best the industry has to offer.

A security vulnerability is, well, a security vulnerability - ANDROID PING!

Android Ping!
If you want on or off the Android Ping List, Freepmail me.

My take: entirely predictable. Any "back door" or security bypass is a vulnerability and it is only a question of when, not if, access will fall into the wrong hands.

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

Thanks to Swordmaker for the ping!!

Note to Firefox users: Firefox also has telemetry that is reported back to the Mozilla foundation. If you'd like to disable this behavior, enter "about:config" (without the quotes) in your location bar. THis will prompt you with a message that changing things can "void your warranty". Accept that, and go on. In the search field, enter "toolkit.telemetry.enabled". Double-click the item it shows you, and that should change the value from "true" to "false".

That's it. Telemetry should now be turned off. To check, go to "about:telemetry" in your location bar. It should show:

FHR data upload is disabled
Extended Telemetry recording is disabled

To follow up to my previous post, the above will only work with a pretty recent FF build. There are more settings if you're on an older build. I'd recommend googling "Disable Firefox Telemetry".

One other cool FF trick that many FF users might not be aware of, is there is a lot of things you can get to via the "about" URL. Try "about:about" for the full list. They used to have one called "about:kitchensink" that would display an ascii rendering of a faucet turned on with water flowing.
