New Orleans woman shoots trophy Mississippi buck<picture>

Conditions couldn't have been better Saturday for deer hunting, with frigid air keeping Friday's sleet and snow in a frozen state on the ground in Jefferson County, Miss. A New Orleans woman says all that ice is partly responsible for her killing the biggest deer of her life.

Marni Demelo, 29, told ms-sportsman.com she heard the deer moving through the woods adjacent to a food plot she was hunting, and had time to prepare herself for what she hoped would be a shot at a big buck.

-snip-

Demelo knew the buck was one she would be proud of, but didn't realize the animal was quite the trophy it was. She called her husband, Tim, to give him the good news.

"He was hunting close and had heard the shot, and when I called him to tell him I had put one down, he said, 'I know; I heard,'" she said. "Then he drove over, and when he got to my stand, he saw the buck laying there and drove right past me to go to him. I was standing there with my hand out ready to get in, and he just passed me right up and went straight to it. He started laughing and yelled back to me, 'Get over here because you aren't going to believe how big he is.'"

The 4 1/2-year-old buck had main beams of 24 inches and an inside spread of 19 1/2 inches. The longest tines on the 10-point rack measured more than 10 inches. The deer cannot be officially scored until after a 60-day drying period, but Demelo said it green-scored 163 inches.

Cue the all PETA types who are going to harass this hunter for “murdering” this buck. I have a hunch that this same outrage mob would be very much pro-abortion too.

Context.

Well her husband has a good eye for nice things but I'm not sure about his priorities.

People down here can work some magic when it comes to wild game or anything that comes out of the water. Sportsman Paradise and everyone can cook, grill etc.

And Swamp Yankees have some great recipes handed down through generations from forefathers who lived off the land. So?

I was so pleased to have found my great-grandmother’s recipe for preparing canvasback duck this morning. Joy!

My *point* is that older deer provide tougher meat than the young ‘uns...and prep is somewhat different.

If you use your lobsters (or are those crawdads [I can’t tell]) as an example; the larger [3# up] ones are much tougher than the smaller ones; and hard shell lobsters are different than soft shell. Jes sayin’

They are crawfish. The biggest difference between up north and down here is you can live off the land year round down here. There is always something you can grow, hunt or catch. My Mother lives in Indiana and growing up they had an acre garden and all summer long they would can and can. And that includes beef and fish. Never pork of poultry.

While I'm on the subject of game I have lived a lot of places and everything is bigger up north when it comes to game. Deer, rabbits, squirrels etc. I figure it's because of the harsh winters that the game has to endure.

Demelo, probably used to be De Melo is a Sicilian surname. Of course that’s not for sure. Does she look like she has some Italian in her?

Oh yeah! Definitely!

Well, one can never be definite, but she resembles MANY Italian gals I know. And has the features that are share by Italian and Jewish gals.

Strange that Italian and Jewish gals should look similar. I dont see any historical connection.

Not like Jews under Roman occupation could marry Roman men.

“What in that picture is there not to like?”

Looks like maybe a classic old car in the barn too! The only thing missing is the weapon she used.
