The NHL to Vegas seems incredibly dumb, though I guess for those who need experience, it wouldn’t make the list.

OK, what former NHL team gave its name to a Major League Baseball team in the same city?

Well, for starters, they might still not find enough English-speaking people in the area to support the team.

Only the NHL going back for a third try in Atlanta would be a worse decision.

Or the NBA coming back to Kansas City.

I saw a documentary on the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings a few years ago. Apparently the biggest problem in LA is that the metro area is so big and the population so diverse that many entertainment ventures have a hard time getting a fan base large enough to support it over the long term. This is particularly true for the “newer” sports teams that made their name in LA long after the USC Trojans and the Dodgers established themselves as the local favorites.

Here is a link to a good article on why the NHL should focus expansion efforts on Canada.

TBP - you are right. The last of the four WHA teams selected to enter the NHL was Quebec who won a coin toss with my beloved Cincinnati Stingers for the privilege.

Cincinnati has a thriving minor league franchise (Cyclones) that draws very well in the 40 year old Riverfront Coliseum (US Bank Arena).

It's a fascinating story of the NHL-WHA in the 1970s.

There's a reason those four cities had WHA teams in the first place. They were considered too small to be viable NHL markets. If the Oilers didn't come into the NHL with Wayne Gretzky on the roster (that whole deal itself demonstrates how chaotic the situation was) and immediately establish itself as a dominant team, they may not have lasted more than a decade in Edmonton.

The Colorado Rockies. The old hockey team is now the NJ Devils (since the early ‘80s).

When the NFL was considering a new expansion franchise in Los Angeles a few years ago, someone here on FR suggested they call themselves the "Galaliens" ... as in, the "L.A. Galaliens."

I still crack up every time I remember that. LMAO.

I don’t know if that’s exactly it. It’s true that the Dodgers and Trojans have uniquely dedicated fan bases in L.A., but the Lakers sold out for many years straight as well. The issue is that it’s a big market so lots of potential fans, but theren there are just too many other things to do. Ten million fair weather fans are both a blessing and a curse!

I remember the first game the Devils ever played after moving to Jersey from Colorado (it was against Pittsburgh).

It was in the then-new Brendan Byrne Arena. The public address announcer came on to announce the ceremonial first puck drop.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, here to make the ceremonial first puck drop in New Jersey Devils history, please welcome the Honorable Governor of New Jersey, Brendan Byrne”.

The crowd immediately erupted in a crescendo of boos and obscenities. I heard “a**hole” and “F**k you!” clearly coming at me through the television.

In a building that was named after him. Very Jersey!

The Rams might as well stink next year so they can draft Darnold.
