Looks like a valid play to me. Alabama had chances to stop Clemson earlier in the final drive but didn’t. No controversy Clemson won.
“Heres the thing: Pick plays are legal. As long as no offensive pass interference occurs, theres nothing wrong with having two receivers run routes that are meant to make things difficult for DBs. Its been happening forever.”
letter of the law is the receiver performing the pick is suppose to be facing the QB as a legitimate target...this receiver was nothing more than a pure blocker and he did in fact interfere with Bama’s DB ability to defend the pass...
I am glad Clemson won, but “pick plays” were not always legal. I first noticed them at the rise of the Patriots. They were definitely not always acceptable either. If the receiver is not in a position to make a catch, or doesn’t even turn towards the ball while impeding a defender, that was commonly called pass interference. Yes, I did have money on last nights game, and I won straight up, and would have won if the play came up short, so this is a “clean” opinion.
Well, now you’ve done it.
I was having a good day, but now I am mad.
It’s pure sour grapes. How many times has Alabama run a play like that? Too many to count.
The bottom line is, Bama finally went up a against a good QB and their defense got exposed.
Remember Notre Dame’s would-have-been game winning TD against FSU called back in 2014 - this looks pretty much the same to me. The NCAA is so much better than the NFL overall when it comes to rules but to me this is an example of having ill-defined rules that leave too much discretion with the officials.
It was a very good play, perfectly executed. Clemson deserves the national championship. They went toe-to-toe with Alabama and wore them down. Then ran over them in the 4th quarter. A really great game.
IMHO my team lost because our coaches played too conservatively especially after they lost their main weapon, RB Bo Scarborough, to injury. Yes Jalen Hurts is a freshman but they needed to open up the offense like they did late in the fourth quarter much earlier. All of those three and outs early in the game wore down our defensive line and they couldn’t pressure Watson later in the game to stop their comeback. This one is on the coaches.
All I know is SLING is getting cancelled at our home. ..couldn’t see the last few minutes of the game as it went on the fritz...my husband was NOT HAPPY
It’s smart by Clemson. They know no official has the guts to make that call on the most dramatic play of the game.
Pick plays aren’t legal. But rub routes are. What’s the difference between a rub route and a pick play? Good question. The best rub routes make the defenders run into each other, because that’s never a pick.
It won’t be Air Force One then, just another SAM flight number.
Looked like they set up a basketball like screen play.
I demand congressional hearings.
