Clemson beat Alabama in the national championship game on Monday night, 35-31, a thrilling end to a very good college football season. The Tigers won the game with a play run with just a few seconds remaining, when quarterback Deshaun Watson rolled to his right and found 5-foot-10 receiver Hunter Renfrow wide open in the corner of the end zone.
He looked almost a little too wide open. And thus began the scrutiny.

For a long time I couldn’t log in to watch the game on WatchESPN.
Just about every coach runs pick plays...and complains about pick plays.
I don’t like them. No, the entire loss cannot be pinned on that - letting Clemson move the ball the length of the field in 2 minutes lost the game. But I’d still like for pick plays to be cleaned up.
I think Clemson ran close to 90 offensive plays. The defense didn’t get exposed...they got worn out...because of a lot of offensive 3 and outs.
I still say in the last two years, Bama has faced ONE good quarterback, and both times he torched them.
I wonder if God had anything to do with the tiger win? I know Bama was doing their best to “take out” Watson, even willing to take penalties to get the job done... which didn’t happen. One of the best games I have ever watched and I have been watching football for 60 years or better. Also I appreciated fewer commercials.
Unless of course the defender grabs the receiver and pulls him down, which of course is what really happened.
For two years Ole Miss beat Bama. They didn’t this year though.
“The defense didnt get exposed...they got worn out...because of a lot of offensive 3 and outs.”
That sums up the game quite well.
I knew Bama needed to get yet another defensive TD to win, and they didn’t get one.
Pick plays aren’t legal. But rub routes are. What’s the difference between a rub route and a pick play? Good question. The best rub routes make the defenders run into each other, because that’s never a pick.
I kept waiting for one too, definitely needed.
It won’t be Air Force One then, just another SAM flight number.
“I still say in the last two years, Bama has faced ONE good quarterback”
Well Brandon Allen is making $2 million a year being a bad QB in the NFL right now.
And there’s a guy named Dak whose making somewhat of a splash in the NFL right now.
A fella named Chad Kelly broke a few records at Ole Miss...most of which were previously held by guys named Manning.
And some NFL team is about to get tricked into drafting Josh Dobbs in the 4th round.
It was another great game and deShaun is an exceptional GB. I was adding it up last night: how many points did Bama get in the 2016 game and haw many did Clemson get, then add the number of points for the 2017 game to each and what do we see? Two teams evenly matched, so coaching had to be the flaw. Sarks will have Bama generating much more offense in 2017, and if they get to the semis, look for lots of scoring.
I have to add that the officiating left a lot to be desired ... receivers pushing off on the smaller Bama coverage was one thing that stood out as not called, while the PI the next to last play of the game was, well, meticulous?
Looked like they set up a basketball like screen play.
I demand congressional hearings.
Pretty evenly-matched teams for sure. Kiffin had a poorly-called game on his last, so not sure he would have been any better. Seems he became too distracted with his new job.
I was pulling for Bama, but may be a good thing they don’t win year after year. That would get just too boring. Clemson flat-out had a great team too, so are deserving of the win.
So now Kiffin has the fan bases of Tennessee, USC and Bama upset at him.
Ha...you’re right. He did surprise me while at Bama, thought he would be a disaster but did well most games.
“...this receiver was nothing more than a pure blocker and he did in fact interfere with Bamas DB ability to defend the pass...”
1st point made, NOT SO as the defender actually GRABS the receiver around the shoulder, making it legal; 2nd point, YES he did ‘interfere’ with DB’s opportunity, but not illegally.
