The North Rim is about 1000 feet higher altitude than the South Rim. No wonder it gets more snow. So what were these people doing there when it was closed?

They were going to the North Rim come hell or high water.

They found hell.

The woman was a triathlete and the family was along for the ride.

Arrogance and Stupidity can go hand in hand. Roads closed so go ahead and take forest service roads to reach that ultimate destination.

They got lucky. It was pure arrogance.
