Did they use cotton to make cannon propellant back then, or just for uniforms?

The captured cotton was probably sold by the Federal Government to help pay for the war. Cotton was not used in the manufacture of gun powder, and all Federal Army uniforms were made of wool.

Sherman was such a jerk.

Maybe, but he won battles.

Four to one population advantage makes it a lot easier to win battles.

Only if you know how to use that man power to your advantage. Men like McClellen and Pope never figured it out. Grant, Sherman, Thomas used that advantage to win a war.

Perhaps if so many men hadn't been killed repelling the various invasions of the South, they might have had enough of an army to cover that ground through which Sherman advanced.

Attrition won the war, and like I said, it's a lot easier to do when you have four times the population, and that's not including dragooned immigrants fresh off the boat.

Don’t start a war you can’t win.

Christ sake Lampster, you’re never going to give up , are you? I wish the hell I had a ‘’Way Back Machine’’ so I could send your ass back to 1861. I’m sure you’d be right at home.

Maybe that should have been thought of by Confederate leadership before they decided to start a war.

Are you aware of the language you’re using? I’m sure I’m not the only one here who objects to you taking the Lord’s name in vain. I understand that men - and even some women - use language like that without even being aware of it. Be aware, please!

We’re adults here. I’m addressing a man who thinks The Confederacy was The Second Coming.

I agree with both of ya. Sherman was ruthless, but war is war, it aint pretty.
Having said that, I think the South legitimately thought they could legally secede. Lincoln thought otherwise.
I’m a yankee having lived in Texas now for 15 years and what I see happening in the South, is Yankee Liberals trying to erase these peoples history that they are/were proud of. I’m not sure I like that too much.

The south’s biggest mistake was siezing federal military installations and civilian buildings throughout the south. Jefferson Davis knew this and even offered to pay for them...but too late as it was after the fact. Lincoln had all the justification he needed.

I don’t think either side thought it would balloon to a full scale war...thinking the other side would blink first.

Problem was both sides were American, they don’t blink first no matter which side. And both sides thought they were right.

Try reading the FR rules again. This is a discussion forum - not a site to attack others who have a different opinion. I will hit the abuse button when you think the rules don’t apply to you.

They didn't start the war. Abraham Lincoln started the war. He did so to protect 300 million in European Trade and to prevent Southern states from setting up competing industries.

He started a war so that the New York/Washington D.C. power corridor could keep their money and control and for nothing else. (Same people we are still fighting today.) It took me a long time to realize this, but that is what the facts demonstrate.

The "live in servitude" may be tolerable by you and your ilk, but there are some people who would rather die.

Nobody at the time thought anyone would be so insane as to kill 750,000 people just to maintain control.

I don't have to go back to 1861. We are still fighting the exact same people today. Washington D.C. and the New York power block still control the nation. They are the ones who have given us 21 trillion dollars in social programs (to keep them in power), Gay Marriage, Abortion on Demand, and they keep complete control over the News Media.

This same power block which has been in existence since the 1850s almost gave us Hillary Clinton as President.

Follow the money. Look at who has inordinate control on public policy. Look who has control of the Ivy League Universities through which virtually all the major government agencies are staffed.

Let’s not delude ourselves. America is ruled by the Five Cities, Boston, New York, Washington, Chicago, and Hollywood. The rest of us just pay taxes. The heart of the beast is New York, the Ivies being its nursery and Washington its storefront.

Figure it out.
