Bare, dry moralization does not help the problem. In a place where there was no love (which furnishes the patience to see around little problems like stolen frosting) only love can put it back. This love comes, either indirectly or directly, from God.
I hope she meets, not further abuse (even though our first impulse might be “she deserves it good and hard”), but a good preacher. And the same for the daughter. A good preacher, who may or may not be a professional one, preaches with his or her life, plus words.

It doesnt matter what her childhood was like. Should not even come into play at any level. She is already going to get a lighter sentence being a woman.
