Two possible options:
1. Consider it a rental and charge a fee equal to the amount of debt held by them.
2. Bill them for damages to the machine, for disruption of the mission and for mental anguish suffered by the crew. Set damages equal to our debt.

Why dont these things have a self-destruct mechanism where if they dont phone home and get an answer at some fixed time, they explode? Probably some EPA regulation prohibits it.
