The incident occurred on Thursday at approximately 2:20 p.m. Pacific time in South San Francisco, after the officer was waved down by someone who was reporting a person causing a disturbance at a local business, South San Francisco Police Chief Jeff Azzopardi said at a news conference today.

"Several patrons reported a subject acting aggressively and irrationally. The officer made contact with the suspect, who immediately became confrontational. During the contact, the suspect attempted to flee from the officer," Azzopardi said. "After a short foot chase, the subject turned on the officer and intentionally struck him in the head with a skateboard, knocking him unconscious."

He continued, "The subject continued running and was taken into custody moments later by additional South San Francisco police officers.

"The injured officer was immediately transported to a San Francisco trauma center. The officer underwent emergency surgery for traumatic head injuries. He remains hospitalized and in critical condition at this time," Azzopardi said.

The police chief went on to say that the injured officer is a 12-year veteran of the South San Francisco Police Department, is married and has two young children.

"The suspect has been identified as ... 28-year-old Luis Alberto Ramos-Coreas," Azzopardi said, adding that Ramos-Coreas has a "lengthy history of criminal contacts with the South San Francisco Police Department."

"The suspect remains in custody at the San Mateo jail, facing numerous felony charges, to include attempted murder on a police officer,"

“28-year-old Luis Alberto Ramos-Coreas”

Sanctuary City. I bet the critically injured officer (or his family) is doubting the merits of that policy right now.

Sanctuary City.

I live in South San Francisco, a few blocks from a police station here. This is not a sanctuary city! You are confusing it with San Francisco, which is ten miles north of us. South San Francisco is a separate city in San Mateo County down the peninsula. San Francisco City is in San Francisco County. South San Francisco is more conservative and family oriented.

South SF has many Latino residents and public officials but it’s not a sanctuary city. There is a somewhat higher crime zone centered on its downtown and Latin areas. But still, SSF only has a couple of major crimes a year — unlike San Francisco which is pretty much a criminal battle zone. Ssf is home to Genentech and several smaller bioengineering outfits , formerly having been a steel and animal slaughter town (but all that’s gone now. Crime as noted exists but most folks would tell you the place’s biggest problem is traffic

One of my daughters has worked at Genentech for many years. It's a complex spanning many blocks with 40 to 50 buildings and growing. The old steel plant is now home to new luxury hotels, with more being built. The entire bay shoreline has been redeveloped with walking trails, fishing spots and picnic areas. Completely different than the old slaughterhouse days.

What you refer to as the higher crime zone downtown, is still relatively crime free compared to other towns in the Bay Area. The downtown has been gentrified with upscale restaurants and is nice, mostly due to business from the biotech companies (which give large donations annually to local schools and organizations here). A huge construction project is underway to build a new railroad station and more hotels. South SF is rapidly changing for the better. Except for the traffic, like you say. A lot of people don't realize it's in San Mateo County, separated from SF by several other towns.

Definitely different from san fransicko! And improving (except for the traffic which city hall seems not to care about — approving more and more high density projects with zero road improvements — but the people are very upset about the dense developments and resulting traffic. Awhile back I had a check made on your planning department. It had approved 1156 new residential units of which 1152 were high density or apartment type projects and only very 4 — right on top of the San Andreas earthquake fault — were homes. The planners also approved several million square feet of additional industrial or corporate protects. And not a single road widening Get ready for every more gridlock trying to get to those 3 new little restaurants.and forget about parking there. Otherwise, -a very nice town IMHO. And definitely not San Francisco.

Yes. San fransicko is only a couple Miles to the north -— and it’s on the iranian islamonazis’ top priority nuclear icbm bombing list. Thank Obama for making this impending “instantaneous urban renewal” possible.

Wow. I’ve only visited California briefly. So I don’t know enough to comment but I hope this man makes a full recovery. He needs our prayers.

Here’s hoping in makes a full recovery. In Seattle a few years ago a couple of “youths” attacked a cop with a skateboard and he shot them both (wounded them).

Of course the headlines were “White cop shoots unarmed black teens.” The incident was investigated and the cop was not charged. IIRC it showed the guys stealing some beer, and another camera showing one of them taking a swing at the cop with the skateboard.

Get ready for every more gridlock trying to get to those 3 new little restaurants.and forget about parking there.

Actually, there's lots of parking. The city built extra public parking garages and lots just off the main downtown street, Grand Av. They have pedestrian walkways from the multilevel garages directly to the restaurants. But yes, all the available unbuilt open land is targeted for high density high-rise buildings combining housing and retail, all on the east side. Not much space left on the west side for single-family homes, not much built lately except around the BART station.

As for the injured cop, hope he recovers. He's an asian motorcycle cop with young children. Sad for his family to go through this during the holidays.

They miss the good ol’ days out here, the days of the Manson Family and the Zodiac or the Black Dahlia. It’s nuts out here.

Open Carry and Concealed Carry without permit, such as we have here in Idaho, would cut down on crime and make these dirtbags uncomfortable living there. We have a little crime here and a polite society. The Law Enforcement and the judges in Ca oppose 2nd amendment rights. Its good “business”for them to keep the status quo. Im a former Stockton resident for 40 years.

Gulling you into chasing them and then suddenly wheeling and attacking is SOP for hoodlums. Don’t know where this cops head was.

Agreed. And it’s our right to keep and bear arms. Cannot be licensed or taxes or regulated or restricted except by an illegal tyrannical state.

Excellent historical knowledge on your part to call SSF a former animal slaughter town.

I award you points!

My first job out of school was at Genentech. They have an awesome buffet. Back in the day they had Friday beer parties.

When their new drug got approved they brought in Stevie Wonder and M.C. Hammer to perform, no lie.

My cousin’s wife is still there and is a high up big wig. She be super smart.

His first wife was employee #8, or something.

Thanks. Smile smile smile. The best thing about the place remains intact there - the Sees Candy factory! Warren Buffett may have generally poor grasp of political theory but he left the candies intact -good quality — when he bought Sees. For this one yummy thing the old leftist geezer deserves a big round of applause, ha! Yum yum
