I just bought a Mossberg Maverick 88. I have a heat shield from a Mossberg 500 coming as well as a side saddle.
I would like to purchase a scabbard but have no clue which one to choose and if scabbards can support a long gun with a 6-shell side saddle. Anyone have any suggestions?

No. It will be carried on BLM hikes with fellow shooters and stored in a closet for use in home defense later.
I should also let you know this is my first shotgun. I’m a little new to this.
I have AR-15s though but they are all in standard nylon cases. My reason for a scabbard is that it’s something easier accessed during a time of need.
Think you can get the scabbards at Sportsman’s Guide.
Dont store a shotgun in a zipper enclosed gun case.
Any moisture in the case or gun will attack the gun metal...

For get them both,get a good sling and practice with low recoil Slugs.
Double ought Buck upto 125 feet,
Slugs after that.
Also, to the OP: When buying practice ammo, buy quality shells like AAs that can be reloaded. A buck or two more for a box is worth it. Save your empties and store them in a paper bag in a dry place.
Use eye and ear protection when you shoot, and buy a cheap cleaning kit too, and use it every time your shoot. It's really pretty easy to clean up a pump shotgun.
And above all, don't store it in a case. A case is only for transporting it. Oh, and to answer your question if you're going to be carrying this shotgun on a 4-wheeler I'd suggest a scabbard rather than a case.
I'd use a case to transport the gun from home to wherever you go 4-wheeling, locked up in your tow vehicle.

If as you said “in time of need” is your goal...Get a good sling...
Educate yourself on African and American style carry, then practice deploying the shotgun to the ready and pointed in at the target from these carry positions...No faster more comfortable way to deploy a slung shotgun...Unless you hike at “port arms”...
The scabbards have a place, and look “tacti-cool”, but slung over the back isn’t the best way to carry and can be awkward to deploy...Lots of ways for the gun to hang up coming out of the scabbard...
Take a look and compare 00Buck and #1Buck...9 .30 cal pellets versus 16 .25 cal pellets...And look at Federal Flite Control ammo...
Then, as Red Badger recommends, carry a few slugs, and practice “select slug” drills for close encounters...Lots of shotgun tutorials on YouTube...

I put an ATI top-folding stock pistol grip on my Maverick since it has a bar safety on the trigger guard instead of on top of the receiver. I also like the feature that you can’t jack a shell into the chamber unless you know the `secret’.
Oh yeah, and I got an 18 1/2” barrel so it fits in a Prince tennis racket case.
I bought a Mossberg 500 heatshield on impulse this morning. Do those fit Maverick 88’s too? Mine is the cheapo Big 5 one you can see online. I think the $209 sale is over now though.
I don’t know. I thought the heat shield was a silly affectation.
But as things became more tense I re-thought a lot of things and may add one.

You’d be smart to keep the long barrel. I kept mine. The more time the powder has to push the lead, the greater the muzzle energy. A lot of the energy from the shorter barrel just blows out the muzzle. I got the short barrel because I like to transport it in my trunk in the racket case. It has to be at least 18” long to avoid trouble with BATF.
If you install a folding pistol stock you can get a five shell saddle-shell holder to screw on top. Five in the tube and five on top.
I put a plug with a sling mount on the tube front so I can attach a sling.
Finally, and this is important—there may be a little lever just to the rear of your trigger guard of your Maverick, left side of the receiver, that you have to push up if there is no shell chambered or you can’t rack the slide. That’s a nice feature to have in case someone (who doesn’t know about it) takes it from you.
I started a personal boycott of Cheaper Than Dirt when they caved several years ago to stopping the sale of ARs.
