Crossroads Mall in St. Cloud on Lockdown for Complaint of Man Displaying Gun

The Crossroads Center Mall in St. Cloud was placed on lockdown Thursday night after a complaint of a man displaying a gun.   Officers from St. Cloud and Waite Park were searching the mall for suspects as a precautionary measure.

Police say the initial report indicated a man and woman were arguing outside the mall when two men approached them and one lifted his shirt to show the couple a gun in his waistband. The gun was not pointed at the couple, no threats were made and no were injuries reported.   Officers say the two men were seen entering the food court. The incident is still under investigation.

I'm guessing that some idiot took a $50 Carry Class and got his permit in the mail today.

This is the same St. Cloud mall, where, earlier this year, an off duty cop shot and killed an ISIS wannabe when he got all stabby in the mall.

You don’t walk up to strangers and show them your gun and then walk away.

That gives the rest of us a bad name.

Open carry is legal in Minnesota.

This was a moron carrying concealed who thought it would be cool/funny to flash his cover garment.

Somebody’s carrying. Big f deal. People do it nearly everywhere every day. I just assume they’re there any time. (And of course it’s their right to bear arms if they wish). So what?

You don’t walk up to total strangers in public and make certain that they know that you are carrying a firearm.

It was a stupid move that hurts those of us who act responsibly.

Would you do that?

I would hope not.

It doesn’t sound smart, agreed. But neither does the response, frankly. My point is just that he has the right to carry and if I saw him with his firearm I wouldn’t panic about it. Have never panicked when seen people packing. Doesn’t bother me in the slightest. Have seen maybe a couple hundred times and just assume some people in any crowd are armed. Indeed that’s a very good idea to do. —— But yes, since I wasn’t there I’m obviously unaware of anything additional that might change this thought. So I can’t really comment any. further.

I wonder if there's more to the story - can't imagine purposely baring my gun in that situation.

I generally carry openly when out and about and where there is a lot of separation. I cover up when in Walmart and Quickie-Marts - personal preference based on assumption that when visible from a distance, outdoors, it may preclude an incident and that in tight quarters I want to not be chosen as a first target.

Situational awareness is our friend and I often run little training sessions with the wife and some of her friends - always shock them at how fast a 64 year old can cover 30 feet and that it isn't a safe distance unless the gun is already in hand and ready to speak. Then I drill it in to their heads that if they fire indoors, their ears will go into shock and they need to ignore the discomfort and hold onto the weapon and be sure they have neutralized the problem. Most shooting is done at ranges with good ear protection and the shock of a weapon in an an enclosed space could very well cause some serious disorientation/unhelpful reaction.
