I don’t believe that it’s possible for an actor who is involved in a movie that features or even dabbles in Satanic elements can walk away unaffected... And a word of warning for those who view it... Psalm 101:3 I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me. ....

TV movie followed the book more closely than the original.

But the "original" is cast very well, and I think it mostly works as just an interpretation, rather than a retelling of the story.

For instance, in the book, Wendy (Duvall's character) was a sympathetic character. However, I thought it was pretty obvious that Kubrick wanted the audience to dislike the movie version as much as Torrance (Jack Nicholson) did. Made her weak and whiny (how Torrance saw her) rather than a strong, good-looking woman as she was in the book.

The scene between Torrance and Grady in the bar restroom is the scene that nightmares are made of. Only Nicholson could have pulled off the right amount of cockiness and craziness ("he IS a very WILLFUL boy..."), then contrasted it with the right "Oh Crap!" look when he realized what he was getting into, and there was no way out.

And Kubrick pulled off the bathroom scene without violence, blood, or gore. But it'll still give you the creeps.

jeez, I feel like some millennial fanboy, reviewing the movie like this. :-)

If you read the book, it’s not a bear suit. And best not to consider what was going on.

Kubrick’s daughter calls for boycott of Shelley Duvall interview

Don’t count on Vivian Kubrick to watch Shelley Duvall‘s anticipated “Dr. Phil” interview. Kubrick, whose father, Stanley Kubrick, directed the actress in 1980’s “The Shining,” penned a letter to Dr. Phil McGraw Thursday on Twitter, days after an alarming clip of his Q&A with Duvall, 67, surfaced online.

Horrible idea to take a woman deeply psychotic like this and splay and even probe her mental illness to get viewers. Sickening.

We are starting to give people with mental illness the respect and attention they deserve. We are starting to not treat them as a joke. This is not a step in that direction.

Here is my example. I spend my day with a special needs child as well as mom with Alzheimer’s. We, the loving family, can joke with them about any quirks (mom you have asked that question 23 times so far, one more time and it’s done, and she laughs), but we don’t sit them down before tv cameras and parade their mental issues in front of the world. Your 6 year old kid might wet his pants but you wouldn’t take photos of his wet jeans for instagram. WRONG.

Get her help but don’t show her at her most psychotic on doctor Phil. Sad.

I agree with you. Shelley Duvall was so much more than an actress in The Shining. She was an accomplished theatre actress and produced an amazing series of live-action fairy tales for HBO. My mom would check them out of the library for me because we didn’t have cable.

Before I ever had children I bought the complete set of Fairie Tale Theatre on DVD. My daughter is now starting to watch them. They’re funny and smart and feature A-list actors in just about every episode.

It makes me so sad to see someone who has given me so much joy struggle like this, and I hate that she’ll be exploited by Dr. Phil this way.
