A funny thing happened on the way to Alabama's football game yesterday.
I met a man who moved to Alabama three months ago. We sat at a communal table sharing food, as crowds do before games while tailgating. We cautiously approached one another in conversation, careful in this political climate not to hit any hot-button issues.
I could tell he was trying to fit me into a box. What did I do? Where was I from?
I could have saved him the trouble. I, no more than anyone, can be put into a box, but I'll try.
I am a middle-aged journalist and journalism professor, yet I love The Muppets, Hello Kitty and Pixar movies. I am a homeschool mom who homeschools for the opposite reason many people in the South do. I am a liberal blue dot in a red-dot state and family. I went to a majority-black Birmingham city high school then joined a (then) all-white sorority in college. Don't let my pearls, blonde hair and blue eyes fool you: I know every lyric to every Public Enemy song ever. I am much more than almost everyone assumes.
And assume they do.

She needs to find a safe space.
So a racist “Journalist” with a chip on her shoulder felt “hated” because she pompously pushes her nonsensical emotion based poltical dogmas at a “protest”.
Gee another pathetic little Cry-bully. Act a fool then cry when people object to your obnoxious behavior. Rather then object to her childish public temper tantrum, we apparently are just supposed to stand in awe of her “poltical bravery”
What are these Leftists doing in the South? Can’t they make money in the North East, or is it overpopulated with their kind and they can’t find a job? It would be a good thing to check these people out more thoroughly before employing them. They hate us but love our money. It’s like nourishing a tape worm in your gut.
She’s easy to pub in a box from her own words (not assuming things just by looking at a person or noting where they live, etc).
Hypocrite.
She homeschools for the right reasons, others do not.
Etc. etc.
If the libtards speak it is a “protest”.
If their opponents speak it is “hate”.
Please take more of them. We have way too many here in the Northeast.
Alabama is an overwhelming Trump state. These crybabies need to get over it. AL.com is a Trump hating publication who endorsed Hillary.
Exactly what happened to me as a conservative when I taught in the public schools. And, almost no one defended me from liberals. So, tell me more...
Leftist like this “journalist” need to assess the role of her tribe and its POTUS’s behavior and policies over the past 8 years before coming to any conclusions.
She sent a message to liberals with that one.

and oh yes, Kumbaya
No, you shouldn't have been treated that way. However, stop and think...we KNOW how much you and your ilk hate us. You can't hide it anymore, you can't try to deceive us any more...it is widely known after this election what all of you think about us. You hate us.
The woman’s a self-absorbed exhibitionist. I bet those folks in Tuscaloosa did not appreciate a bunch leftists imposing themselves on them during a football game day. Leftists have no concept of how to respect the “space” of others and are constantly trying to exhibit their political views in places where it’s not appropriate.
This is a fantasy essay, and she’s a monstrous, bald-faced liar.
Hmmmm? Safety pin (for diapers) or firing pin. I’ll take firing pin for $1,000 Alex.
You cannot practice a right. The so called rights we have are restrictions on our government. You do not have a right to free speech because what you have is a right from the government restricting your speech. And tou certainly have no right to be heard!
She walks in a protest march with her 14yo daughter because she was participating "... to stand up for every person who has felt frightened or ignored by the president-elect." Further, she says "I practice the First Amendment each day. Freedom of religion. Freedom of speech. Freedom of the press. And yesterday I practiced the freedom to peaceably assemble, which I had done before (and covered dozens of times as a journalist), yet this time was different." Why was it different? Because "What I didn't expect was the depth of their hatred for people simply practicing their American rights."
I would say this to this Professor; Could it be that the 'hate' she felt came from her intolerance of the results of an election just completed? The spectators, having gone through a year+ election cycle, see participants who essentially want to discard their votes because the marchers disagreed with the results. So Professor, was it hate or was it disgust?
When she states the following "I love my country. But the people of America have let me down with their lack of tolerance, just as Alabama fans did as they poured out of the stadium, or stumbled drunk out of bars to degrade people of a different color, religion, or opinion, and anything else they didn't understand.", I would like you to remember the near universal output of your professional colleagues over the past decades that sneer, smear and otherwise demean non-liberals! I would remind you of the LEFTIST intolerance in Academia which refuses free speech to voices they dislike. I fear that you are blind to the fact that we see an intolerant LEFT that you identify with and we, rightly in the ballot box but with a minority using hate speech, are responding to the same. FYI: If you think the conservatives are the only ones using bad speech, listen to your fellow marchers in other cities. I dare you to let your 14yo daughter listen to that spew!
Alabama recruits them with good scholarships. More than 50% of the incoming class is from out of state.
My daughter is there and turning hard core liberal. Of course, social media is also helping.
She ended up not voting. She did know that Hillary was very corrupt. She just hates Trump.
Her boyfriend is a big Democrat and wants to go into politics. I think they will eventually break up. When they do, I think she will turn more conservative. I pray that will happen at least.
