The Coast guard issued a high-surf advisory Thursday and warned surfers and swimmers to be on the lookout for dangerous sneaker waves.
Even the regulars at Pacifica State Beach said it was tough to catch a clean wave Thursday afternoon.
"The waves are a little big for this beach," said Francis St. Amant.
Ann Hicks and her two kids enjoyed the massive swells from a safe distance. \
"Theyre only a sneaker if youre not watching," she said with a snicker. "I think its pretty strong for the kids to play."
A couple of miles north along the cliffs in Pacifica, Michele Coxon is among those who welcome the winter waves to her backyard. She says a lot of people have moved away because they cant sleep. s "This is paradise day, absolutely," she said.
Huge boulders nearby act as a buffer between the ocean and Coxon's living room. But just up the street, her neighbors dont have the same protection. One of the cliffs has been crumbling into the ocean since early 2015.
"Pretty soon, well have beachfront property, and theyll charge us for that," business owner Simone Dimapasoc said.
The coastal hazard was issued on Thursday at 6 a.m. and extends through Friday at 5 a.m. It covers the coastline from Point Reyes National Seashore to Big Sur.
are the whales visible, surfacing yet?

Ah yes the little known “sneaker wave”.
?
I live in Pacifica. Will be hitting the waves tomorrow morning!
That dude could surf cant believe its been that long ago
I'm just over the hill from Pacifica, in South City a couple miles away. I think I'll check it out (on the pier, well away from the walkway along the beach where people get wet).
The sea level is rising!
Lived there when I was 2 in 1967, one wave hit and ran right up the beach and was taking me right out:) Thankfully I was grabbed. Love Pacifica.

Sweet. I have surfed there numerous time. Super cold water, lots of seaweed, and full of brave surfers. The worst is using a towel to get out of a wetsuit in the parking lot on a freezing cold morning. Yikes. I hope the waves are good this weekend.
I used to surf a lot...Huntington to Ensenada...
Never surfed Mavericks...wasn't really on the radar in those days.
Hard to think it was that long ago...now.
Foo died in Half Moon Bay.

Those aren’t waves, those are ripples.
Here are some vicious, extremely heavy, man eating waves at the aptly named Manly Beach in Oz.
They eat surfer after surfer, and I have no idea how someone can survive taking a tumble in this washing machine.

Half Moon Bay - somewhat south of Pacifica I believe. I knew Mark in middle school. His father worked for State Dept (?) and he spent 3 years in DC area before returning to Hawaii. He really was quite crazy, no fear personality. Even then he predicted he would die surfing - it was his passion, even as a kid.
Paging Spicoli!
.
Sneak or not, the waves along the San Mateo coast are always massive.
You can feel them while sitting in your car in the parking lot above the beach, much of the time.

Damn, that’s right over near the beaches I like to hit with the detector when the surf is like this. When all the sand gets pulled off a crapload of goodies shows up. I caught it just right with a few other guys there a few years back and there were silver coins flopping around in the surf. I got 27. They were pretty ratty, but silver is silver!
Sneaker waves - I remember the early days of “sneaker net” in the computer world....
Any reports on Mavericks?
No not yet, but I imagine today will be one of the better days of the year out there. Big solid swell, offshore winds.
