Microsoft Surface Studio is a new category of device, designed to put you at the center of the creative process. Turn your desk into a Studio.

Microsoft really has re-invented the desktop design studio.
I am knocked out by this new product. Watch the video -- yeah, I know, it's a sales video. But it's really amazing technology!
Also, I'm going to try to dig out videos of the old (early-2000's) original "Surface" devices. They were like coffee tables with an embedded video screen.
This is SO much more refined and capable...
I'm sharing my excitement because this is exciting and I think many of you will also find it exciting. No other reason.
is there windows based computer that does everything the surface book does? I like the surface book pro just not the price. 3k is a bit much.
You'll also no doubt get a chuckle out of how... ummmm... "familiar" the layout of the Surface Studio product page is. I almost thought I'd accidentally stumbled onto apple.com but as they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery... LOL.
Ummm, the Surface Book -is- a windows based computer, is it not?
Or do you mean a conventional Windows desktop box that you get a separate video display for? In which case do you propose to have a touchscreen for the video display, because if not, then it won't do what the surface book does?
I'm not sure I understand your question, simple though it sounds.
“Caution: Your mileage may vary!”
LOL
I’ve been saving my pennies. I usually upgrade all my CAD CAE CAM computers every 3 years. The biggest issue for me is graphics hence I always buy the big work stations as the graphics cards in lower end laptops are not compliant (compatible but not compliant) The graphics cards I use cost double what the rest of the hardware costs. But it looks like the new generation of hybrid laptops will work well. So... This will probably be on my shopping list for end of year big purchases. At $3000 for the setup that’s not a big deal. Considering my last laptop was $6200 and my software is about $7500 per year it’s small change for the “cool” factor.
That is slick.
I guess I’ll see it in 4 years when I can get one used, unfortunately.
Whomever gets one, try not to get a bunch of scratches on it before I can buy it off you!
Yep.
> I guess Ill see it in 4 years when I can get one used, unfortunately.
You and me both.
OTOH, it's only a third of the original $10,000 Surface from the early 2000's! :-)
LOL! I think there are far more appropriate example of people on FR that “shill” for a tech company, before every considering you, sir.
Heck, I’ve been so wrapped up in the election, I’ve completely forgot about their new product show today. So this was a nice excuse to take a break!
And just imagine the original Surface “furniture” was nothing in terms of computing power! and was mostly a projection on the back of a screen!
Feel sorry for the people that bought that!
Yeah, I immediately thought about CAD as an obvious application for something like this. It looks like a terrific platform for the next generation of big design apps. The ability to move and change position and orientation just like a drafting table is awesome.
I agree -- the prices is quite reasonable for what it does.
And it wasn't actually a touch surface. There were a bunch (5? 6?) of cameras that scanned for the presence of fingers or other objects, and coordinated what they saw.
Nice.
A little pricey, but very nice!
Microsoft is creating neat products and WACOM better watch out.
Look at WACOM tablets such as this.

You're right. It is very nice and very slick. Cool in fact. Too bad they had to copy Apple in the look of their webpage for it. I would think they would have gone for something less derivative on their website and not tried to be so similar in look. That is not cool.
I think it is very good they did not copy Apple on their wireless keyboard. They kept the full ten key numeric pad. I wish Apple had not decided to go with a truncated wireless keyboard as a default design. Microsoft's design is far better. I wonder if they will be selling the keyboard separately from this model computer? I would buy some for my office.
The 28" screen is 4500 pixel horizontal and 3000 vertical (192 DPI), but that's less than the 5K 27" iMac's 5120 X 2880 pixel display (218 DPI) . 13.5 million pixels v. 14.75 million. Of course the iMac screen is not a touch screen.
But it neither surprises nor shocks me.
They know their prospective customers -- designers and artists who traditionally have preferred Apple's offerings, the iMac in particular. I would not be surprised to learn that they figured out that people who traditionally read about and buy things from Apple's site are used to how it looks, and are comfortable with that look, and less comfortable with things that smack of Microsoft and Windows. The Apple site's look is, after all, wonderfully designed for those sorts of people to feel at home in.
So Microsoft mimicked it. No surprise there. They learned what works.
After all, the MS Marketing folks are STILL smarting from this one, where they got it wrong (yeah, I know it's a parody):
