The National Football League has sent a memo to team owners seeking to ease concerns about the ratings decline that has hit football this fall. Through the first four weeks of the season, NFL viewership has declined 11%, and among the crucial adults 18-49 demographic that advertisers covet, ratings are down 12%.

Money quote:

As for a potential backlash by some viewers angered at players not standing for the national anthem to protest of police brutality, the NFL said it sees no evidence to that being a factor in declining ratings: "In fact, our own data shows that the perception of the NFL and its players is actually up in 2016."

Roger Goodell doing his Baghdad Bob impersonation. But that is fine with me. I hope as ratings continue to decline the NFL owners will wake up and fire his self-righteous weasel ass.

NFL may be on the way out. It’s not like we can’t live without football.

There are none so blind as those who will not see.

Perhaps the fossils in the NFL & sports media conglomerate don’t know that very few teens and young adults watch television these days. Fewer still play football or other team sports. The future for NFL ratings will continue to decline, and shameful protests by America-hating multi-millionaire players doesn’t endear the League to their older audience.

It certainly is a confluence of events! Stupidity, arrogance, aloofness, smugness, and a “we are unsinkable” view of the landscape.

They’re wrong if my circle is any indication. I used to be a game addict, watching every Monday, Thursday and Sunday game I could. Now, I only watch one team, and no one on that team has ever taken a knee or insulted the flag - the NY Giants. My friends are the same way with their respective teams.

This is fine. If they cannot acknowledge the problem, they will never resolve it.

And this will be the end of them. May take time, but if they place so little interest into solving a problem like this, it will consume them.

Well it might have something to do with pro football games becoming unwatchable. Between the wannabe female reporters everywhere, the incessant commercial breaks, and the interminable “instant replay” breaks, who can stand more than 30 minutes of a game?

I would love to be a fly on the wall when the NFL owners read Goddell letter...

My late father was a true football fanatic who played in HS and in the AF, later coached HS and watched every game the television set could deliver to him. In his later years, he stopped watching the NFL because there was no "character" (as he termed it) left in the game at that level. Near the end of his life, he watched less college football for the same reason. Had he lived to see Kaepernick and Goodell enabling thug culture, I believe he'd have needed to get some new obscenities to shout at the television.

I’ve lived without football for 20+ years, and I don;t miss it.

Keep whistling past the graveyard Roger. You really are that stupid.

Let them commit suicide. It's their own doing. Them not stopping it immediately has caused it to flow out to children. That is unforgivable.

It’s a sport where the cool players, and I assume they exist, couldn’t self police the jerks over fruity celebration dancing and chest slapping displays after routine plays. The NFL had to come up with lame rules to stop the worst of it. No way any players are going to self police each other over this anthem garbage, I doubt the modern game would allow it what with replay and penalties.

And the thing is the NFL only became more popular after the celebration dancing and chest pounding became the norm.
