Beatings will continue until morale improves.
“The only traditions of the Royal Navy are rum, sodomy and the lash”
1 out of 3 is not too bad.
It makes the other two a bit easier to take.
That paper charging 16 cents in 1896 would cost $4.60 in today’s dollars.
“BIG GUNS FOR SANDY HOOK”
That’s pretty ironic right there.
Try reading “Voyage” by the late actor Sterling Hayden - it’s set in 1896 and covers the rich, poor, sailors, lumbermen and politicians of the era. Definitely slanted to the left but an excellent read about the times.
I love reading these old newspapers. An article on the first page talks about Republican Presidential candidate McKinley having 80,000 people show up to a rally in Canton, OH. He won the election, but for many younger people the map of the states carried by McKinley would shock you.
McKinley won California, Oregon, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Ohio, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, NH, Vermont, and Maine. The donkeys took the south and the remainder of the west. Almost a reverse of today’s political map.

One of my favorite books.
Ooops. I forgot the ping list.
If you want on or off the ping list for the daily newspaper from 120 years ago, drop me a line, either here or by FReep mail. The rate is 23 cents per week (3 cents for the dailies and a nickel for Sunday).
That map is very interesting, almost opposite of what we see with Trump and Clinton today...Thank You for that...
Read ‘Two Years Before the Mast’ - a memoir by the American author Richard Henry Dana, Jr., published in 1840. It was written after a two-year sea voyage from Boston to California he made on a merchant ship starting in 1834. It was instrumental in reforming maritime law.
Except it only cost 3 cents. Perhaps you were looking at the '16 pages' at the top of the page?
I came on here to say exactly the same thing. “Two Years Before the Mast” remains one of the most interesting books I’ve ever read. Those sailors had a rotten life at best.
I am astonished at the phenomenal amount of news in the paper.
On P.10 there is an article about an Irishman who had been in prison———it said he was “seemingly an imbecile”.
Can you imagine the brouhaha if that was printed today.

“I am astonished at the phenomenal amount of news in the paper...”
Wait til you see tomorrow’s paper. The Sunday edition is usually pretty packed with news and information.
What is the hint again for making the paper more legible? When I go to the site it is too fuzzy to read.
Because of the high resolution it can take a minute or two for the text to clear depending on the speed of your computer and your connection.
Yeah, you’re right. I saw sixteen pages and flashed on sixteen cents. Thanks .... :)
