More prosaically, Huma might have stayed away from a high-profile public event because she might just not want to deal with a horde of reporters badgering her about her husband. On top of that, there are still questions swirling about her connection to the Clinton Foundation, so everyone might have felt it best that she stay out of sight for a while.
