I dont like Piers one bit and boy did he ever mistep talking to a 12 year old in that manner but aren’t giraffes an endangered species? I am conflicted on this a little bit. It’s not like they’re like deer, coyotes, and wild boar which are plentiful.

Big Game hunting brings a lot of money into African countries, lifting many people out of poverty.

It’s highly regulated, and no one sneaks in and guns down endangered species. The hunts are sanctioned and controlled. The death of this giraffe does not move the species closer to extinction.

Didn’t some zoo kill (or let die) a giraffe lately?

Forgot the details.

I agree with you here. The giraffe killing was needless, simply to satisfy ones vanity. It was simply wasted, not used for food or anything. Giraffe populations are in decline. “Buffalo” Bill Cody would ride in a train and shoot buffalo in like fashion, leaving them to rot. He “earned” the moniker “Buffalo” by having shot 250 bison in one day, all of which I assume were useless kills, left to rot. Indians were also known to stampede entire herds of bison off cliffs, how many were used for food or clothing is not known.
A sad part of the bison history which almost drove them to extinction. I did read one author who claimed the bison were decimated , leaving only 14 at one time in the US. But the last arbiter on this question should not be the clown Piers.

No, giraffes are not an endangered species. They are plentiful on the savannas of Africa...

You think this 12 year old girl went out into the savannahs of Africa to hunt without permits and sanctioned by the local game officials...?

If you want to cast blame, blame those who sanctions giraffe hunts

As for Morgan he's pure asshole for even asking such a vile and disgusting question..

All the large herbivores tend to snack on people's farm crops, and the large carnivores are threats to people.

If there wasn't some valuable aspect to them (like bringing in lots of $$$ from hunting fees), the locals would happily exterminate them. Sending in "environmental agents" to protect endangered species would not work either -- the farmers are so close to barely hanging on that they would happily exterminate the "environmental agents" too.

They sell permits or tags to cull managed herds

That’s the case with most big game in tropical Africa

No. Not the kind she hunted. And yes, most types of giraffes are not only plentiful but are a nuisance animal.

There are a few African Animals that are endangered but the vast majority are not.

There are nine subspecies of giraffe. A couple of them are endangered and those won’t be hunted. In general, the giraffe is classified as least concern by conservationists.

The biggest problem they face, as with nearly any species in the world, is land use.
