Ford pledges to have a fleet of fully autonomous cabs on the road 'by 2021'....

Ford intends to have a fully driverless vehicle — no steering wheel, no pedals — on the road within five years.

The cars will initially be used for commercial ride-hailing or ride-sharing services; sales to consumers will come later.

Ford CEO Mark Fields announced the new goal Tuesday at the company's Silicon Valley campus in Palo Alto, California, sparking rumours it could sell the cars to Uber - which is already testing its self driving systems using the firm's vehicles in Pittsburgh.

...

Nair says Ford will continue developing driver-assist systems, like automatic emergency braking or lane departure warning.

But making personal cars more autonomous is dangerous, he said, because Ford hasn't figured out how to make sure drivers stay engaged and ready to take back the wheel when the car encounters an obstacle. Removing the driver solves that problem.

Judging by the fact that I have never owned a car with power windows in which those windows did not fail totally, I cannot imagine a hotter form of road hell than autonomous cars.

“driverless” cars are not driverless, so all talk about them is a fraud.

I looked forward to my 57 Bel Air being hit by an autonomous car and then suing the big pockets who made the botcar back to the neolithic.
