Back to Black: Remembering Metallica’s ‘Black Album,’ 25 Years Later
Yahoo ^ | August 11th, 2016 | Jon Wiederhorn

Twenty-five years after the release of “The Black Album,” Metallica are still struggling to recapture lightning in a bottle.

For the first seven years of their career, Metallica’s main objective was to be the loudest, heaviest, fastest, and most mind-blowing band on the planet. They had no commercial aspirations and sought to rail against what they perceived as the vacuous, frivolous mainstream radio rock poisoning the airwaves.

Then, after touring for their fourth album, 1988’s …And Justice for All, Metallica had a change of heart and underwent a striking, abrupt transformation. The disc that followed, which featured a jet-black cover, barely visible coiled serpent, and the band’s logo, would thereafter be known as “The Black Album,” even though its official name was Metallica. And it would cause major waves within and outside of the music industry. For Metallica, the eponymous release was filled with mid-paced songs that relied on simplicity, atmosphere, and groove — and symbolized a new beginning.

Metallica morphed from a pure thrash metal band to songwriters. And as a result they not only became filthy rich and famous, but also highly respected musicians in the rock world.

I bet one of their riffs is in your head now, vying with that Beatles song.

Or Black Sabbath.

One of my favorite rock bands. They definitely have a place in the pantheon.

Nothing Else Matters and The Unforgiven are good songs, no doubt, but the rest of that album is not good.

Hetfield is one of the best there ever was though.

I’d rather listen to their good sh*t though.

I cannot believe it has been 25 years since that album came out. One of the finest rock albums ever.

What songs did they perform?

Enter Sandman still sounds great - and when you can still sound great after 25 years, that’s a classic.

A mere 25 years AFTER Revolver.

Those disturbing clips are taken from the movie “Johnny Got His Gun.”

The opening sounds of Enter Sandman is the greatest riff ever.

Gladly I have avoided this music until today. You say that ‘One’ is hard to watch. Is that because perhaps it is anti-American trash? The first song mentioned ‘Sand Man’ was as satanic as I supposed it could be - the old wrinkled man is obviously old scratch himself as the song makes a mockery of Christianity.

Every album up to and including the black album is great. Then they went into Alternica for a while which what everyone was doing. Garage Inc. might be the best from that era.

Some kind of monster is simply cringe inducing. Kirk had a line about not having solos, he was like ‘that is what everyone is doing, it will cast the album from this era.’ St. Anger sounds like it was recorded redlined in a dumpster with a drum sound like hitting garbage cans with no Metallica solos.

Don’t take stuff so seriously.

You miss out on a lot of good music by doing that.

I don’t generally decide what music I like based on the politics or religion of that music.

The more important question to ask of good music is is it good music?

Remember being awestruck the first time I heard Enter Sandman, one of the best metal albums ever. Load and Reload were phenomenal follow ups as well.

I am the only person in the world that thinks St. Anger is a great album.

Someday I’ll give it another shot. It was really hard to listen to, but holy cow it’s been 13 years, it can’t have gotten worse.

I also have to really work on separating St. Anger from Some Kind of Monster. If you have never seen the Some Kind of Monster documentary about the band during recording St. Anger, and you enjoy St. Anger, DON’T see the movie. Just enjoy your St. Anger.
