Freeper help requested - opossum in the walls
8/07/2016 | papineau

I've got an opossum who's hanging out in my ducts and walls. I was thinking of getting a trap and catching him (or her, I don't want little possums to raise!) and letting him out in a field far away from me.

Anyone have any experience with possums in the house?

Get a licensed removal agent ... If that thing is rabid you want no part of it ...

I’ve had two encounters. The first shot usually is a miss. It will leave big holes in whatever gets in the way.

Catch em live trap, use earthworms for bait. Put earthworms in nylon stocking so they don't escape. Tractor suppy has good traps for sale. Good luck!

If you decide to adopt him, he will need four different shoes.

I used to plaay possum when my ex-wife was haranguing me, but that experience did me no good and I doubt it has lessons for you.

I second that. They can be nasty little buggers.

KENNY BUNK'S OPOSSUM A LA FREEP

Preheat oven to 500 degrees

1. Nail Opossum to 2x4 board, preferably oak. Do NOT use pressure treated wood.

2. Galvanized nails are OK.

3. Place Opossum in oven.

4. Cook for 5-6 hours at 500 degrees, basting occasionally with plain water.

5. Let stand for 20-30 minutes
6. Remove nails.

7. Eat 2x4.

They rarely get rabies and despite sounding/acting aggressive, they are fairly docile.

The possum is not rabid. It is not a mammal. Fish and kangaroos don’t carry rabies, either.

I trap them with cage traps. Very easy. Take far away, or clean and cook.

Find someone with a rabbit box....Use the box where the possom enters and exits...

When I was a kid, I had 4 rabbit boxes and generally caught 3 or 4 possums for every rabbit...

Not a possum, but squirrels. We threw bits of waffle to the animal and step-by-step led them out.

I was reading just last night that possums rarely carry rabies. But all the same, it is a slight possibility and they could easily chew through wiring.

Get a gun and shoot the little f88ker.

Fix the holes later.

I raised an opossum from a pinky and kept her for two years then found a great home for her.

THEY ARE NOCTURNAL ANIMALS so it will be most active at night and would be the best time to catch her. They will eat just about anything. Maybe use something smelly like salmon.. A little bit of fruit like banana or something..

They can be VERY mean, lots of razor sharp teeth. Or startle it and it will pass out and play dead.

NOTE: If it's a she with babies the good news is, she take the babies with her wherever she goes!

It is a marsupial as are kangaroos and Koalas and Tasmanian devils.
