East coast: About $4.00 a pound for 80% lean, or up to $6.00 for 93% lean.
If this “steak” is from China...are you sure it is from a cow? You know what they do with their prison population, right?

OMG!!! This reminded a few months back when I had no money but a few bucks. I went to the 99 cent store. There was a small roll of “Ground Beef”. So I brought it and cooked it. OMG!! lol it tasted like crap and it did not have texture like ground beef nor did it have the look of ground beef. I do not want to know what the heck I put in my mouth but one thing for sure I immediately tossed it out in the garbage.
It’s amazing the shafting they give you at a steakhouse these days. I foresee many steakhouses (and restaurants generally) going under. It just isn’t worth what they apparently have to charge to stay in business anymore. Almost without exception, when forced to eat restaurant fare, I sit there grimly chewing and ruminating on the fact than I could have made a better meal at home for less than half the cost before tipping.
That’s right.
We only go to a few restaurants that are particularly good quality (food, service). Most of the prices are three or four times what you’d expect......and so we make sure to go to places with good quality food....and then only go infrequently due to the extreme cost of doing so.
Depending where the restaurant is at, they can have lots of expenses. It is far, far better to eat at home most of the time, and you have better quality control at home, too.
Restuarants have always been a difficult business but now they appear headed for a major cut-back just due to the excessive menu prices ... especially with all the Obama unemployment, people cannot afford restaurants very often anymore
True. It's hard to justify 73% ground beef these days. I buy boneless beef ribs when they're on sale for $2.97 and stock the freezer. We can't afford to pay more so real steak cuts are out of the question. I'll cook them like steak. Some are chewy but most times they're a passable steak. The remainder of the package that had chewy ones will go into a stew, Chinese, the pressure cooker or such. Found some packages of boneless pork loin chops a couple days ago for a dollar something.
The beef/pork mix we buy has virtually no fat so not a bad deal and tastes great .
I didn’t have powdered milk in my house for 30 years because mom would try to feed us that @%_&$)^*&@#. Now, it is only here to use in yogurt and breadmaking. She’d buy unsweetened puff rice and pour in powdered milk for our breakfasts. Disgusting. Then the neighbor felt sorry for us and furnished us with milk straight from the cow - ohhhhh, myyyy, heaven!
When dollar stores first started they didn’t have ao many items made expressly for sale in dollar stores: off brands, watery shampoos, extra-small sizes, etc. Instead they often had stuff that their buyers had obtained at close-out sales of stores going out of business. I used to find name-brand after shave lotions like Canoe and Old Spice and large bottles of expensive Kalamata Greek olives, for example.
I agree that the canned corned beef is nothing like regular corned beef; however, I like canned corned beef hash.
We stock up on Asparagus at the $ Tree. It’s in a glass can and is produced in Peru. It’s the best canned Asparagus I’ve ever tasted.
The box, and the website, says “Ultra High Temerature Pasteurization.”
Mexican and it’s range fed actually.
I’ll have to try your recommendation for asparagus at Dollar Tree. I recently got some excellent Emeril Lagasse Marinara sauce at Dollar Tree. Smaller bottle that’s overpriced in the markets and probably didn’t sell well.Picked up by Dollar Tree buyer.
I hope you stock up on air freshener for your toilets, too.
I worked with a guy who ran a gold mine in Southern Arizona some years ago. He said that one day a ragged guy in a beat-up car showed up, looking for a job. He claimed to be a first-class welder (he was), so the owner took him on, on a trial basis.
He let the guy sleep in an on-site tool shed when he mentioned he was sleeping in his car. The guy asked for a days pay in advance so he could go into town and get some grub.
He came back and asked the owner if he'd like to share supper. The owner asked what was on the menu and the guy said "Alpo and Kraft Mac 'n Cheese - make a GREAT casserole." The owner tactfully declined.
A funny thing - I've opened up cans of dog food and have to admit that it didn't smell bad, whereas opening a can of cat food gave me the heaves.
I just happened to buy a carton of the Gossner milk (whole milk) and it was very good. Worth having in the house in case of emergency, or if you happen to run out of milk.
The species of which King is an example is known for specimens that will eat cat feces ...
