Emma Zajdel, a 9-year-old from Ocean City, caught a 94.6-pound cobia near Little Gull Shoals about a mile and a half east of Assateague Island on June 30, Maryland Department of Natural Resources confirmed Monday. The record shattered the 79-pound state record set in 2014.
Emma and her father, Ed, were fishing with friends hoping to catch some bluefish in the area that day when a line went tight. Emma set the rod in place and braced for the catch, said Maryland Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Service spokesman Joe Evans.
At first, we thought it was a shark, and the line was going out, she said, according to a Department of Natural Resources news release. I could hear the reel and the drag and I thought I could go over the side.

I - I - I don’t know, this sounds a little fishy to me . . . .
Snoot ;o)
(I HAD to say it) !!
Congratulations to the young lady!
Unfortunately that fish does not look edible.
Maryland? I didn’t realize cobia even got that far north.
Congratulations.
Good for her. If she never fishes again in her life, she’s still made her mark. Good for the dad teaching her how to do it. He was able to resist butting in on her selfie. She did this! I’ve never heard of Cobia. I hope it’s edible or can at least be stuffed by a taxidermist.

Heh! Apologies to Andrew Zimmern...
The Cobia is edible:
Human uses
The cobia is sold commercially and commands a relatively high price for its firm texture and excellent flavor. However, no designated wild fishery exists because it is a solitary species. It has been farmed in aquaculture. The flesh is usually sold fresh. It is typically served in the form of grilled or poached fillets. Chefs Jamie Oliver and Mario Batali each cooked several dishes made with cobia in the "Battle Cobia" episode of the Food Network program Iron Chef America, which first aired in January, 2008. Thomas Keller's restaurant, The French Laundry, has offered cobia on its tasting menu.
Are you kidding? Cobia are (at least in my opinion) one of the best-tasting fish in the ocean.
Yeah, I imagine her Dad had a lot to do with the over all process. The girl may have baited the hook. And she may have reeled the fish toward the boat. Hey, give the girl credit she was in the boat with the adults who more than likely did most of the work.
in final analysis, it was her rod and her reel and her bragging rights
giving the kid the bragging rights is what being a parent is all about
Yes, my old Cobia fishing grounds. I miss those days. Kudos to the youngster.

Here in Florida we eat cobia (previously called ling) of any size...they're all good.
Largest ever caught on my boat (not by me) was a 76 pounder, longer than the guy that hooked it. He was flat-lining (Trolling) and only had about 15 feet of line out. It was a big challenge for us to gaff a fish that was not the least bit tired...not fought/played to the stern.
They big ones have been compared with pork-chop in the eating department, but nothing beats smoking them.
Ling is what they call them around Sheeps Head Bay, out from NYC.
Only bad fishing trip I ever took in my life. Friend said let’s go out on a party boat, use their gear. Must have been close to thirty on the wretched vessel. Shoulder to shoulder, lines getting tangled and what not. Just I was ready to pack in and just drink, felt a tug on the line, clearly nothing big but what the heck. Reeled in a 3lb or so ling. Turns out with the tangle of lines, the fish had wound itself up on my line and basically almost strangled itself himself. I just took to drinking beer after that for the rest of the trip. Swore off NYC party boats.
I’ve been fishing since I was 5. When I was 9, I almost caught one big enough to drag me into the water. If the line hadn’t broken, it probably would have. My dad was on the other side of the river, I was doing it all myself. The only thing he did was drive me to the river that day.
I believe her.
Holy Mackerel!
Her Father used her as the bait ?

Mwah ha ha. Don’t forget to twist the ends tightly before lighting them

The hardest part of it is keeping them lit.

I was looking for a way to say that. You did it quite well.
