Melissa Mark-Viverito: NY's economy would lose 100s of millions under Trump’s immigration policies
NY Daily News ^ | July 13, 2016 | Erin Durkin

The city would take a massive economic hit from Donald Trump’s deportation and Muslim ban policies, City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito plans to say in a speech Wednesday morning.

New York City and state would lose almost $800 million in tax revenue from the undocumented immigrants living in the five boroughs if they were deported under the presumptive GOP nominee’s plan, according to an analysis by the Council that Mark-Viverito will unveil in a speech to the Association for a Better New York.

“The numbers tell one story: Donald Trump’s racist fear-mongering proposals would hurt New York’s economy. And they prove beyond a doubt he is unqualified to be President. Taken altogether, the human and economic costs of these proposals are undeniable and unjustifiable,” Mark-Viverito says in excerpts of the speech provided by her office.

Employment would decline by 340,000 jobs now held by undocumented immigrants if the mass deportations took place, the Council predicts.

It’s unclear what would happen to those jobs if the workers who hold them were booted from the country — immigration advocates say businesses would be unable to fill the necessary posts and take a big hit.

Supporters of tighter immigration controls say tougher laws would leave more jobs available for Americans.

The analysis also found that workers in New York City who were born in Muslim-majority countries contribute $14.2 billion a year to the city’s economy.

Trump has vowed to ban Muslims from entering the country — though he has flip flopped repeatedly on what the policy would look like, sometimes saying it would only apply to countries that produce terrorists.

About 263,000 New Yorkers come from nations where at least half the population is Muslim, the Council found.

“Mass deportation would rip people from their homes and tear communities’ and families apart. These mass deportations would be a Trump-branded reign of terror,” Mark-Viverito plans to say in the speech. “And banning Muslims would set a religious test for immigration where none existed before. These trample on civil liberties and insult the constitution of the United States of America.”

She calls the once-crowded Republican primary contest “a race to find the candidate most eager to strip immigrants of their dignity — and the undisputed winner of that contest is Donald Trump.

From the moment he rode down his escalator, Donald Trump has built a platform expressly designed to drive us apart — he has run a campaign based on racism and xenophobia.”

This libtard queen of the illegal immigrants is in reality NYC's very own lobbyist for Puerto Rico far more than she represents the citizens of NYC. She is CONSTANTLY calling for more and more taxpayer money to be diverted to Puerto Rico to bail them out from their bungling attempts at self-government. I do not recall in recent memory anything from her lips which would benefit the non-Hispanic average NYC resident. Instead, she shoots off her ugly mouth about the numerous "injustices" against illegals when in reality they are bleeding us dry, taking up precious seats in vastly overcrowded classrooms, sucking up welfare, EBT, housing, medical services, etc.

She claims that Trump's anti-Muslim policies would "set a religious test for immigration where none existed before. " Baloney. There surely was a limiting of Jewish immigration, especially during WWII when refugees needed a sanctuary from Nazi extermination, costing thousands of lives. There was also a quota on Catholic immigration during the early 1900s.

As far as the purported $800 million in tax revenue from illegals, how do they pay taxes if they are working off the books, as most are? Aren't we always hearing about the poor poor illegals "living in the shadows"? And how would that $800 million stack up against the millions of dollars expended on what seems to be a mostly illiterate unskilled group of non-assimilating Hispanic and Chinese illegals? They are CRIMINALS, entering our country illegally, yet collecting the prize of free this, that, and everything else, but she natters on and on about "stripping immigrants of their dignity". If you saw how they live, how they are turning whatever neighborhood they live in into a slum "just like back home", you would laugh at the absolute stupidity of her words.

Her entire reasoning is as full of holes as a colander. Her allegiance to ILLEGALS instead of U.S. citizens is obvious. Her latest anti-Republican tirade should be dismissed as a laughable attempt at sounding relevant. She is a nightmare for legitimate NYC citizens and I just cannot see how she got elected. Of course, the entire City council is full of winners just like her, fiercely out to promote their extreme leftist agendas.

... and save billions in welfare and crime costs.

Not to mention, profitability is not a very strong argument for ignoring the law. Ask any streetcorner drug dealer.

Please, these people don’t even bother trying to understand his immigration policies, they just take the script handed out by the Liberal Establishment, and make stuff up from there.

Why not over a 100 Billion? Just a 100 Million? Geez this gal is just another liberal idiot spouting BS out of his mouth like he thinks he’s important. The current POS all-spark demonic activity transmitter in the WH can’t leave fast enough for me because he’s created so many clones of himself during this administration.

Funny how they always say that treating illegals like illegals is bad, they never let on how much money would also be saved by the taxpayers if we step on the illegal “economic boosters”.....

BS, but even if true - TFB.
We essentially stopped ALL immigration from 1924 to 1965 ... and it's time to do it again.

So, the liberals really don’t have any compassion for the illegals...they just want the tax money they generate...

BTW, I can guarantee that the city spends more money on the illegals then it gets in tax revenue.

Also - can this idiot please explain what “undocumented” means?

How did they come up with those numbers? Out of thin air likely. The cost in taxpayer dollars for illegals to be here is immense.

Actually, if this is correct, it just illustrates the massiveness of the illegal alien problem.

At this point the left is just making crap up

These numbers are as real as a three dollar bill, don’t believe this nonsense

The reduction in crime, welfare and rents would make up for whatever nickels they toss into the economy.

These liberal “economists” are fools

This airhead shouldn't be making economic policy statements until she checks her conclusions with reality.

Whatever New York’s “government” would lose, the “economy” would probably gain. This is the liberal mindset at work. They believe their scam is the economy, that they have the first and most righteous claim on it, and the mere peasants out there who make it happen are simply cogs in a giant wheel that could never exist without their munificence and brilliant planning and control. It’s thoroughly piggish and despicable. Government is the “anti-economy”.

When they see government spending money on these illegals they see that as a good thing. It means a “rich” person had to pay for all of that and has less money to buy yachts, houses, businesses, etc. Which to a jealous twit liberal, is a good thing of course

This happened in New Jersey a couple weeks ago when Christie proposed the gas tax hike with a sales tax reduction. The liberals just could not stand thinking that some rich Wall Street fat cat in Hoboken getting a $25,000 reduction in taxes when he buys his next Yacht. They ended up killing their own bill because of it... Christie played them good haha

It is that bad for them.
