The planes cockpit voice recorder indicates there was a fire on the aircraft before it crashed and an attempt to put it out, a senior source from the airline told CNN Tuesday.
The revelation adds another detail to a picture thats been slowly emerging since the May 19 crash. But investigators have said its still too soon to say what happened aboard the flight.
The cockpit voice recorder captures sounds from the flight deck, including flight crew conversation, alarms and background noise that can help investigators understand what the flight crew was doing.
Authorities havent released a transcript or revealed details about what can be heard in the recording. French investigators were working to repair the voice recorders damaged memory chip.
What they are not saying, and they are not telling us or discussing, is what might have caused the fire? CNN aviation correspondent Richard Quest said. And that remains, of course, the absolute top question.

Ask Hillary, its probably on her server.
Blame it on a video. Someone was watching an Anti-Islam video and it caught fire.
I caught something interesting on last night’s France 24 broadcast.
The anchor said the results from the recording were being “referred to the crash investigators and the prosecutor.”
Why would an accident be referred to a prosecutor?
I bet it was a flare in the toilet.
Achmed! Head for the water!
I don’t care what they call this martyr op. I will not fly on an airplane from a Moslem country or one that I know has a Moslem in the crew.
Hell, every time you go to the airport, you’re probably being groped by a Mohammadan (T)ouch (S)exual (A)rea Agent.
I can put up with that if I need to get somewhere faster than my bike will get me there but suicide by pilot is not something I am ready for. I am, however, waiting for a TSA to go JIHAD and kill a bunch of people whose pockets are empty.
At this point I begin to suspect that I will die at the hands of my government, optimistically with some other bodies in front of me. Everyone who is not a troll and who posts on a site like FR needs to consider that and prepare accordingly.
It was a radicalized fire, a non-Islamic radicalizd fire.
I saw a report that said that the very aircraft in question made two or three "emergency" landings in the 24 hours before it crashed.
If true (and that's pretty easily confirmed or refuted) that would be your proof for a massive mechanical malfunction.
It was a workplace fire.
Yeh a detonated explosion and fire.
"The attempt to put out the fire has to sound realistic."
And how big an explosion started that fire? We know it was a terrorist bomb on that plane.
Did they finally admit there was a bomb on board? Not being sarcastic. I just haven’t heard that yet.
It seems they are still trying to figure out what caused the fire. CNN had a pilot who has at least heard part of the transcript and said they were in fact fighting a fire that came from the avionics section.
To be honest, I hope it isn’t a flaw with the aircraft. Airbus has had some issues in the past yet they continue to sell the heck out of their planes.
There is no proof. I am just voicing my beliefs and conviction. No, there is no new evidence.
