George Noory made a brief mention that Art Bell has been in and out of the hospital here lately. He is back in now for problems with COPD (shortness of breath) Colitis and possible pneumonia. I can't get Art on my terrestrial radio, and am not yet in the habit of using my computer to get radio. So, I hadn't given Art any thought in quite a few months.
I was saddened to hear that he's been feeling poorly for the last few months. Art is not quite sure when he'll be back on the air. He does have a tablet or laptop with him in the hospital, right now. This allows him to communicate through his blogs. Art says he now regrets the many years of heavy smoking. I presume that is what caused his COPD to develop. If you have good memories of listening to Art or George through the years, you may consider saying a little prayer for him now.
Art is one of those intense personalities who seems to thrive off of high drama. His real life has been quite interesting. He is estranged from most of his former family, but very close to his present one. It matters not to me. I just appreciate his years of strange tales like the Chupacabra and bizzare people such as John Titor, who may or may not have existed in a dual reality.
Ugh. Sorry to hear this, I haven’t listened since he dropped his latest radio show.
He has been a good host. Get better Art.
Against my inclination, I became an Art Bell fan some years ago during a long period of insomnia due to illness. Bell’s humor, genial manner, and relaxed, conversational style are appealing and are backed with respect for his guests and audience. And, while Bell downplays his politics, not only does he have establishment skeptical and generally libertarian views, but he made supportive comments about Rush Limbaugh during his period in rehab. After several months of listening, I came to regard Bell as one of the most important conservative radio hosts in the country.
Listening to it at 2 in the morning on a dark highway is the only way to have heard CtC with Art Bell.
Was like listening to Orson Wells War of the Worlds every night.
Welles’
COPD finally got my aunt last December. She also had been a heavy smoker. Apparently, it is progressive in nature and when you get up in years it is not good. Art, a radio aficionado from way back, knows how to create visuals with his words. With his great radio voice, skill in interviewing and true interest in the mysterious, unexplained, and weirdness in the world around us he creates late night radio theater at its best.
perfect imagery .... from THIS retired trucker.
Love Art and George, but they are tinfoil wearing ‘out theres’
Get well Art.
When I worked 2nd shift I would listen to him on the way home. Then his son got HIV and he moved to the Philippines. I went to 3rd shift and lost track of him. Can anybody update me on what he’s done since then?
First off his son was kidnapped, taken over the state line a raped by his teacher who was HIV positive.
Some years later, while on a vacation in their RV, Ramona died of asthma while Art was asleep.
He was a mess for awhile then met a young woman from the Philippines - Aaron, pronounced Erin - they wed and he moved to the Philippines.
Later they moved back to Pahrump and have at least one child.
He had a show on XM but quit that over XM’s reluctance to stream for more than one our at a time.
After his Non Compete lapsed he went on the internet for several months until some deranged lunatic began shooting at his home and studio while he was on the air.
We wish him well.
I believe this is the same condition that took Leonard Nimoys life not long ago. Nimoy, of course being Dr. Spock from Star Trek.
Bell an Obama supporter .
Thanks. It really was a unique and more importantly, fun hour or two. Depending on how long your drive was.
You must’ve heard him way more then me. Would’ve made me a little nervous if I was a trucker. But you guys are a different breed. Cheers.
heh .... retired 6 years ago and STILL have no “normal” sleep schedule.
He brought his internet show to over the air radio sometime last year. Several months ago he was claiming someone was shooting at him or his family and left the air again. A friend who owns radio stations carried the show when it returned. The show continued with a female host, but she wasn’t Art. Friend dropped the show and I don’t know what happened from there. Our local station carries an hour or two or Art Bell Somewhere in Time which are repeats of his 90’s and early 2000’s shows around midnight on Saturday nights.
What’s a normal sleep schedule? I grew up on pro wrestling and late night horror movies. I fly all over the world and people ask me if I’m jetlagged.
Ha! Kindred souls.
Dang.
