Here's the thing. If you put someone on a terrorist watch list and then bar them from purchasing a firearm, you give them an easy way to tell if they're on a terrorist watch list or not. Once they know they're being watched, they will behave differently. Intelligence gathering will, thereby, become impossible. This is a bad idea for this reason.

But our Government can always be counted on to do the wrong thing so, why stop now?

Anyone on a terror watchlist who tries to buy a gun should be thoroughly investigated by the... shot as an enemy combatant.

Anyone on a terror watchlist who tries to buy a gun should be thoroughly investigated by the FBI and the sale delayed while the investigation is ongoing.

It won't be "delayed," it will be prohibited, Chris, and you're going to wake up some fine morning and discover that _you_ are on the list as a "terrorist".

After this crap is passed, all pro gun bloggers and conservatives of any description will suddenly find themselves on the watch list.

Brilliant strategy!!! I can’t think of any reason why a person who is listed the terrorist watch list should be legally purchasing a firearm. Very few people would have opposition to this proposal. I’m happy to see the NRA supports it. Takes the “common sense gun law idea” away from liberals and gives it to Trump.

So, you believe that someone on the terror watch list should be able to get the gun on the spot and then take a u-turn to the nearest theater to do his thing?

Don’t try to ‘fix’ what the Founding Fathers wrote in the U.S. Constitution. Their wisdom comes from prayer and fasting and the battle scars for freedom.

A friend and co-worker of mine was somehow put on the “no-fly list” and only found out when trying to purchase a airline ticket a couple of years ago.

Contact HSA to find out why ... no response. Asked how he can get off of it ... was told that if it was a mistake they will look into it.

With the politicization of the FBI, IRS, HSA, no one will be immune from being “identified” as an enemy of the State.

No Due Process, no recourse, no rights.

Great point. The grabbers will use this logic as a basis for denying sales to ALL people, on or off the lists.

How does one get on the list?
How does one get off the list?

I need to know these two questions before I have an a opinion.

Thank you.

Honestly, I’m confused as to why a new law is needed to implement this. If a background check is requested by someone on a terror watchlist, just put the request on hold and go investigate the person. FBI/ATF start with fresh location information.

The left won’t settle for that. They want instant and permanent ban on anyone on “the list.” A gun ban in effect. All they have to do is redefine “terrorist.”

We’ve now entered into the “If you want your gun, you can keep your gun” part of the debate.

Number one item: National right to concealed carry. How can state and local entities circumscribe the U.S. Constitutionally protected right to bear arms?

Typical government. So focused on laws but they forget one law all the time - the law of unintended consequences.

We all have to submit to a background check when purchasing firearms. What they propose is delaying issue until the person on the list has been cleared by the FBI. The FBI will be given a time limit to either file or drop the case.

Many states have mandatory wait times for firearms. This would be no different other than it would only affect those under FBI investigation.

I’ve emailed my GOP senators. Anyone want to hold their breath, waiting for Juan McCain and Jeff McFlake paying ANY attention to their constituents?

Me neither! Those two serve DC, and DC alone!

The current terror watch lists are everything a Big Government liberal should love -- no idea how people get on them, no idea how people get off them, and they create the illusion of safety instead of actually providing it.

Totally ineffectual Big Government at work. With plenty of cheerleaders here.

Some are worried that Trump is caving - I see his wanting to talk with the NRA as a good thing. He will hear what needs to be heard and likely heed their advice and reasoning.

To some, it may sound like a good idea, but there are too many problems with it, especially as so many have been put on the list for political expediency vs. any terror connections. If they are on the list for valid reasons, they shouldn't be walking around free to plan and commit murder - that would solve the problem of their buying weapons....

Seems to me the ‘terror watch list’ is handled by very incompetent people.

And lots of qualifiers to the ‘protected class’, which render it (almost) completely useless.

If we don’t solve the PC culture as the root problem, prohibiting anything including the guaranteed right from the Constitution is absolutely fruitless.

Do we know what criteria is used to stick people on the list? Just watch the current criteria expanded to include any number of groups - previous gun purchasers, tea party folks, Christians, conservatives, registered Republicans, members of conservative forums - all fair game.

For all we know, every one of us here at FR could be on a list of some kind, if not on the no fly list - yet.

This is just another power grab and attempt to prevent people from exercising both their 2nd and 1st Amendment rights.

Don’t fall for it and don’t expect for SCOTUS to save the day.

I would be totally surprised if even left wing groups such as the ACLU would support this.
