America's Postal Service Is Dying a Slow and Painful Death
National Interest ^ | June 14, 2016 | James Gattuso

It’s no secret that the postal business is shrinking. First-class mail volume is melting away like a popsicle in the sun—down 40 percent since 2000.

Less well-known is the shrinkage of the U.S. Postal Service’s board of governors. It is supposed to have nine members (not counting the postmaster general and deputy postmaster general). At the moment, it’s down to one.

At first blush, this May sound like good news for those who think the Postal Service is a government-run dinosaur that should be dismantled or sold off. What better start than to eliminate the board? But on closer look, this postal decapitation is not a solution to USPS’ shortcomings, but a stark illustration of the problems with this government-owned enterprise.

Duh. Go to a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday delivery model. Then to a Tuesday, Thursday model in 5-10 years.

Maybe someone like Donald J Trump can straighten it out.

Fedex doesn’t do what the post office does. The postal service will be around in some form for quite a while. They should at least ditch Saturday though.

The only thing saving them is the fact that they got the Amazon deliveries contract. And they do a crappy job of it, too.

I find if I order my Amazon Prime items on Friday evening, the USPS actually has to deliver them to me on Sunday. HaHa.

That’s not a good plan... Both FDX and UPS outsource a lot of “last mile” delivery to the USPS because it’s so expensive for them to deliver to resi addresses. Alternately the USPS uses both FDX and UPS for air, TL and rail transport of packages and mail. It’s a pretty good symbiotic relationship.

FD: I did competitive analysis for UPS for 3 years

They priced small business out of mass mail advertising.

Trump will put this out for bids. This thing we have is just a big inefficient government boondoggle. Don’t need Saturday. I want all junk mail NOT DELIVERED.

It’s been dead for years. It’s only been massive tax dollar transfusions that is keeping the appearance of life.

Fedex doesn’t do what the post office does.

The only reason FEDEX doesn't do it is because it is against the law for them to do it.

The post office is a federally established monopoly.

don’t fret none, the government will continue to prop it up using our tax dollars...nothing much will change, except costs will rise (most being hidden in the form of government subsidies), and service will get worse.

It’s not Trump’s decision. Congress would have to pass that for it to become law. Besides, Trump will be more focused on other things as he should be.

That doesn't bother me. Mail delivery is one of the basic functions of government. If tax dollars subsidize it, I'm ok with that. I would much rather have my tax dollars used for mail than most other government functions.
