He might have imagined it, or wondered about it (the speed of light measurement was first attempted by Leonardo Davinci, but not too scientifically; I’d have to look up when the first accurate attempt was made, it used a series of mirrors on a wheel if memory serves). Using his formula for gravity, the figure for the mass needed for a body to have an escape velocity exceeding the velocity of light was figured out as pure research, long before anyone started talking about Black Holes.
