Trump is blowing it. Yes, his supporters are fervent but are there enough of them? The media is painting him as a racist with multiple coats. Some of them he has managed to wash off but they are accumulating and sticking now.
Character assisination is pretty easy when the media wants to make it so but it is simple as falling off a log when the character you are assisinating is already painted as spotty.
