Ramadan 2016: 9 Questions About the Muslim Holy Month You Were Too Embarrassed to Ask

Challenge Accepted:
  1. Does the price of a goat go up or down during Ramadan?
  2. Do terrorist attacks go up or down during Ramadan?
  3. Do honor killings go up or down during Ramadan?
  4. Does Satan worship go up or down during the month?
  5. Do more prophets go through the roof or less?
  6. Are there muslim werewolves?
  7. Are they allowed to transform during the full moon?
  8. What if someone is going to have a medical procedure in the mourning that they have to fast for? Do they become an involuntary martyr?
  9. Do child marriages go up since the children have been starved and are easier to restrain?

Last year, I had a class seminar episode (for several weeks) which went through the Ramadan period, and about a quarter of the class was made up of Muslim guys.

So, note the big rule here...you can’t have water (any fluids), smokes, or food...from sun-up to sun-down. This was in July, so you can imagine the heat and dehydration. By 11AM each day, I’d say that the frustrations and dehydration was having a serious affect on these guys. They weren’t able to concentrate and those who were smokers....were in a bad state of mind by noon.

I made a quiet comment to one of them during the break one day....that this dehydration thing was hurting their body and would likely trigger kidney failure early in life. They agreed with me, but there’s tons of peer pressure put on them and there’s no exemption from the episode.

If I were a boss of some plant or company which requires physical effort, then I probably would avoid hiring Muslims because of the safety issues and potential for dehydration. Maybe this all made sense 1,300 years ago....when you just sat under some shade for 12 hours waiting for the sun to go down, but in modern times? For a whole month, as an employee....you are letting the company down and potentially killing yourself over some fraud.

I live in the desert. 12 hours in the shade of 110 degrees will still dessicate you.

Ca they get IV fluid?

As far as I know, Christian fasting never included abstaining from water. Of course, Jews would abstain for water for Yom Kippur, but that is only a day. But still, that's a long time without water.

Ramadan is when we all meet up at the Ramada Inn to show off our homemade clocks and apple pies. And statistically we are just as likely to keel you during Ramadan.

Nope, they are supposed to make it an entire day without food, beverage or smokes.

If you look at how they do it in the Middle East....most guys get up at o’dark-thirty, go to work, and have some last breakfast deal and big chug of water right before the sun comes up. By 10AM, they go into siesta-mode and don’t work...mostly trying to stay in the shade, and wait it out until sun-down. Construction projects during this period...going to almost zero accomplishment mode.

Personally, as more and more end up in western countries and try to make it through this 30-day period, without water, especially in the months of June and July...more and more will suffer kidney issues by their 40s and 50s. The women might survive on into normal ages by avoiding physical effort during this yearly deal, but the guys can’t avoid dying early.
