They said the gorilla had hold of the boy and their thought was that there’s almost always a violent reaction with tranquilizing. I don’t know about tazing, but maybe it would be the same, and maybe they didn’t have that capability and time was important.

A taze would instantly freeze the animal — the problem might be, though, that like tazing dogs, the taze power has to be kept up or else the animal will spring right back up. It would need a different design of tazer, one with a substantial power pack.

Indeed. I have anesthetized animals, and there always is a phase where the animal thrash around prior to going to sleep. A gorilla thrashing around like that while holding a child could easily smash the child.
